Spontaneous cyclechat ride

There's me putting Ted to bed, when the phone buzzes with a text from MistaPreston.

"Riding?"

Ack! Its Thursday, and I said I'd revive the Thursday night rides with the boys. Texts go out to Lupin (of this parish), plus buddies P & D. Plan swiftly resolves to meeting at mine for 8pm, and I skip a few pages of Thomas to keep the schedule. Ted complies by acknowledging but permitting the accelerated pace and promptly falls asleep.

Flashing lights in the hallway. Ok. The boys are here...

D wants to check out a possible cycle commute route to Greenwich, so goodbyes are made and we quickly peel off towards town.

Bromley Hill is rapid, Catford and Lewisham pass with a blaze of sirens, Greenwich is picturesque.

From there, a quick nip along what's left of the Thames Path cycle route (not much at present) taking in a slice of Richard Wilson's reality, a quantum cloud of Gormley, and the interactive twinklies that used to grace Matter's doorstep.

In its current configuration, the Thames Cycle Path avoids most of the interesting local history, but preserves all of the gravel, sand and dust that gave this route such favour with the shareholders of Muc-Off.

After narrowly avoiding being sucked into the Blackwall Tunnel, we finally came across the sign graveyard that marks the approach to The Barrier

From there, back along the road to Greenwich, follow the A21, tackle Bromley Hill, and home.

All in, a very nice ride. 25 miles or so. Few hours. Cheers guys.

I had to go to uni today (Thu) so that was a 33 mile cycle with 11 on the Hybrid in between. Nothing spectacular and the wind was strong. I saved my better riding for later that night; after the Japan game I went out for a quick 11.8 miles. I'm enjoying these 10 mile burst at the moment and the light nights :-)

Made a snap decision on Wednesday that I would do a 50+ hilly ride on Thursday, followed by a 100+ today and climb Rosedale chimney.

Thursdays ride was a disaster, too much beer watching England match and nothing to eat all day on Wednesday left me with no go and struggled on the hills. Ate most of a 16 inch pizza, followed by most of a 10 inch pizza and a large portion of chips last night.

Set off to Rosedale at 0600 to try and beat most of the traffic as I wanted to take the shortest route mainly on the A roads, plus I stuck to about 15mph so I did not arrive at Rosedale 3 hours (47 miles) later worn out. Got to Rosedale and watched across the valley how vehicles negotiated it to spot the steep part 33%, and verify the info from the following site:-

http://www.climbbybike.com/climb.asp?Col=&qryMountainID=8699

When it came to the climb, I found it strange and did not seem as bad as I expected. Oddest part was when I felt weightless and then realised with being in my lowest gear (triple) I was climbing doing a wheelie and never really noticed I was and from then on it became hard to keep the front wheel down and not go over backwards. Sadly I had to stop part way up as I met a large tanker coming down on the S bends and he swung over to my side to get round them so I had to get off the road to give him room. It took me roughly 16 minutes to get up.

The hardest part of the ride was afterwards when every little hill became a struggle for the next 20 miles, my legs seemed to have stiffened up after riding downhill and on the flat for a while, eventually I got back to normal.

I decided to have a bit of a lie in this morning and went out with the Dunfermline Cycling Club for the first time. It was a nice pace to the Dollar cafe stop, 18.1mph and 17mph back. If I've done my sums right it was 17.7mph for the 37.12 miles with a healthy 1800ft of climbing. I dropped them on the way back, I followed another roadie who upped the pace; at the junction at the bottom of the hill I stopped for a while but they never caught up perhaps they went a different way into town than us?

Went out this morning and thought I'd just explore a few roads that I haven't been on before. Ended up doing 26.5 miles at 15mph on the hybrid with 1230 feet of climbing. Quite enjoyed it - and looking forward to my new Secteur arriving this week from C2W

Nice one

IME of flat bar to dropped bar, you'll be doing at least 15.5mph on the Secteur and with the new bike factor too, you'll be doing 16mph

Marvellous 52 miles in warm enough but not too hot sunshine this morning... started early, hardly anyone about... was riding really well... just all fitted into place... one of those days! Climbed well too (5 significant ones)... only downer was strong headwind that got up on my way home... but a great ride nonetheless!:biggrin:

A bit less impresive than all your saturday morning rides but...here it is

Managed 8 miles today in 40 minutes after managing 5 yesterday on my first time out in years.

If anyone knows Glasgow I go along the Edinburgh Road from Westhall Road to cumbernauld road then come back along gartloch road on to wardie road and home .

Sorry I posted this elsewhere I don't know my way around forum yet.

Hot for Chunal! I'm melting thinking about it, which way were you headed?

Did about 3 miles today on my tourer which is still set up with flats and toeclips, no straps and under-inflated CX tyres for winter. It was like an armchair bolted to a tractor and very comfy. Tomorrow I'm aiming to lighten it up a bit for commuting duties for a couple of weeks.

Went Romiley, Marple Bridge, Mellor (long climb), New Mills (outskirts), Hayfield, Chunal, Glossop, Dinting, Hattersley and home..... nice quick spin on the best bike..... TBH The climb through Mellor was harder as it was a headwind.

Had thought of turning left at the top of Chunal to ride down the infamous Chapel Brow/Monks' Road into Charlesworth (1 in 4 on the brakes hard), but thought...nah, I'll have the fast descent for my efforts instead....

Monks Rd needs lots of brake, I went down there to test my first ever bike with disk brakes. And then touched the rotor at the bottom for a nice burn

The descent to Glossop down Chunal is very quick
