@Hill Wimp and I went to RSPB Ham Wall and Westhay Moor Nature Reserve on the Somerset Levels yesterday morning (we were there for 7am!) and despite a rookie error when I picked up my lenses but not the camera and had to run back for it, managed to get a few decent shots - though a better zoom lens is required if this becomes a habit.

The beetle sex pic is really good.
The one on top used to be painfully shy. It's good to see him coming out of his shell.

Sorry, couldn't resist it! Great pics!

Thank you. And yes, for once, I actually am. (Ok, so I did have a confidence wobble at 6am and messaged a photographer friend, who told me to shut up, albeit politely and kindly!)

The great spotted woodpecker at the suet feeder has just told one of the sparrows off for daring to presume it could share the feast. It has retreated into the honeysuckle and is patiently waiting for the woodpecker to leave.
you do well with the Little Owl, I seem to remember some time ago you had a wonderful picture of one sat in a drystone wall ?

I have never seen one, we're on the Northern edge of their range but I don't even know of anyone who has seen one round here.
Loads of drystone walls must be one of the answers. A lot of the walls round here are banked, so the vole population is huge. I now know of at least three territories where I could more or less predict a sighting given long enough. They must be at their busiest right now, but quite what he thought he was doing on a phone wire at 1 pm on a hot sunny day is anybody's guess! The lack of trees at this altitude also means they aren't hidden from view.

The pond at the top of my garden was busy with pairs of blue Damsel flies yesterday. There was a pair of red ones but they were both male and were busy chasing each other off. I have noticed another variety which is lacking colour, almost transparent.
What I find amazing is that they all emerge from a tiny nymph.

I worked at High Close YHA in the Lakes last year and there were loads living in the grounds!
