A couple of birds I saw at the nature reserve at Slapton Sands. A Blackcap and a Great Crested Grebe.

Whilst out on our walk to Torquay this morning we saw some small fish in a small lake that had been cut off as the tide receded.

A couple of weeks ago I was out for a run @ about 5am down the shared use path which goes through fields with high bushes either side, looked up and saw something coming straight ahead about 30 metres away then it glided off to the side into some trees, it was an owl, must have only been 5 metres off the ground.
Fantastic to see stuff like that, always feel privileged.

This is why I love walking my dog at that time in the morning,
The amount of wildlife is amazing,
Here below is a very poor photo done on my phone of a Little Owl.

A couple hours fly fishing tonight. Around the lake I saw rabbits, pheasants and a rather lovely family of little grebes. The young were still in the fluffy stage but wow, they could still hold their breath for a while.

The oddest encounter was with a very recently fledged bluetit. He managed to collide with my stationary and very thin fly rod and crash land in the drink! I fished him out straight away and carefully dried his feathers with a piece of kitchen roll. Off he went managing to take off quite well and head for the sanctuary of a bush.

A couple of late night dog walk encounters. Firstly the other night after a shower of rain, it was still warm and humid and I noticed several bats flying just above the road surface, in exactly the same way swallows do before it rains. Not one of them was much higher than 18 inches off the tarmac.

Next, a question. Our walk tonight took us over a stretch of heather moorland. The path is a ribbon of sandy single track and I use a torch to stop myself stumbling over the rough surface thanks to my hip. I caught a glimpse of rapid movement on the path, and saw a small brown shape disappear down a hole about 15mm across. There was a plug of soil crumb, still moving as I stooped to look closer, and I formed the impression that whatever had disappeared had used it to close the mouth of the hole. Anyone care to tell me what it was?

Google suggests a digger wasp, and I forgot to mention the slug curled up just outside the entrance. Can't imagine a wasp being active at night though.

A ride over the Snake Pass yesterday in very nice weather. Bubbling curlews still going strong but the lapwings have shut up now

Managed to hear a couple of yellowhammers giving it "little bit of bread and noooo cheese" song. And a couple of tree pipits were doing their parachute flight display while I stopped for a pee

Ok nothing to do with my bike... But a bird has flown into my conservatory and then into the glass trying to escape. I've popped it in a box just to let it recover.... I was able to pick it up easily. How long should I leave it in peace before trying to release it. And yes I know it may not actually live if it's done some damage.

Can you put the box somewhere safe from cats with the lid off so it can leave when it's ready?

Though perhaps it's gone by now.

I went to check on the Kittiwakes today. As well as the Tyne Bridge I went up onto the viewing platform on the Baltic. Lots of chicks with the parents standing over them to create some shade - it's been hot in Newcastle today.

If you look closely you should be able to see some of the chicks. The seventh nest from the right has three chicks. The rightmost one is still incubating an egg.

According to the group who survey them there are approximately 60 more nests than last year - which was a record year. Sounds like good news for Kittiwakes!

Setting the controls for the heart of the sun.
No piccies, but on the commute saw a buzzard on the ground in a ponded field. I did wonder if it was about to, or had just had, a feather splash. A couple of miles later, a lovely male pheasant casually ambling across the road. (An unadopted road to a few houses so relatively little motorised traffic). Quite often hear them on that particular stretch, but sightings are not common, (to me at least).
Then in Salford, disturbed a grey squirrel in a roundabout underpass. That was very unexpected.
Days like that, or the earlier dawn chorus, make a 5.20 start so much more pleasurable.
