A new bird species for me on my bike....redshank

One was calling in a low lying, marshy field south of Macclesfield. Never saw it unfortunately. And a cuckoo calling from about a mile away when I sat in the garden with my porridge before setting of this morning

We have Great Crested Newts in the wild life pond..and Common Newts..

We're on a roll this weekend ! After Friday nights bird success, today we visited the Newport Wetlands Centre. Now we hadn't seen any Bearded Tits there previously in 7 or 8 visits, but today we were lucky enough to see a pair flitting about in the reedbeds.

Result !

It is the caterpillar of the drinker moth.

Tipula Maxima...the largest British cranefly.

Not my photo. I found one in the conservatory this morning. They're huge with a leg span of about 100mm

Are you saying there is more than one type ... for some reason I've never thought to look for any differences.

We noticed how this branch on an elm tree had grown strangely.

Same here but I could tell this one was not the same as the one we usually see.

So a bit of research this morning shows that there are about 300 species of cranefly in UK. Luckily the one I saw was quite distinctive
