Nice little spot yesterday but bizarre in a way. Snow all over Skiddaw and the northern fells but on a sheltered spot on the River Ellen, swallows, house martins and sand martins all happily feeding on the wing together.

This is most definitely a Grey Heron. Nothing else like it in the UK

Saw another one this morning, was huge, must have had a good five to six foot wingspan. But far the largest one we've seen. Also saw a couple of smaller pure white herons in Abbey Park today, think they are called little egrets.
The occasional little egret turns up in Deptford Creek. They're rather cute and attractive birds with an endearing leg shimmy as they kick up the mud looking for hidey fishes.
