Heltor Chasca

Out-riding the Black Dog
One of the many times that I stopped on my ride yesterday to take a picture of the view, I glanced down and saw a snake.
(Near Sennen.)
I took a picture but I was leaning over the bike at the time.
It didn't seem to be moving so I put my bike against the fence nearby so I could crouch down for a better angle.
Unfortunately that was enough to send it slithering away fast.
This is a crop of the picture I took. Sadly there is litter in the undergrowth.

From googling, I think it's an adder and it's the first time I've seen one in the wild.

Beauty! Years ago I was bitten by one on the Gower Peninsular. (Not a body part btw.) I had blood blisters on my fingers, toes, lips and nostrils.

To put my stupidity on a scale: Apparently only 30 people a year get bitten, so I’m quite high up on the dunce ranking.

Just redirected this fella from a stairway to some offices in work...
He had got to the top by the time I got him!

Not today, but 19/8/2108 at my brother's house in Woodhall Spa, after the bog light had been left on overnight. I'm useless at identifying butterflies, apart from about 8 unmistakable ones, so I'm not going to start on moths! Feel free to enlighten me.

[QUOTE 5366952, member: 9609"]I followed four of the Sanderlings for may be two miles, they walked/ran nearly the whole way in front of me, that is some achievement for legs that length, then little legs go at some speed.

here's a nice little painted lady in the garden at home , Do these really migrate here from North Africa ??? has this one really started off in Morroco or somewhere like that and is it going to fly all the way back --- or do they breed and die and the young fly back to north africa ? don't know much about butterflies, but that seems a hell of a journey for something so little

Re Painted Ladies....I understand that the ones you're seeing are born in UK from immigrants. Perhaps brexit will put a stop to this

Lovely Sanderling photo

While taking a break at Net's café this afternoon a gentleman with binoculars alerted everybody to a great spotted woodpecker on the bird feeder. Then a bunch of canada geese flew over, noisily. And six guinea fowl wandered down from somewhere, possibly Ness Gardens. Also noisy, when alarmed by (well-behaved) dog.

I went to my aunt and uncle's house at the weekend and they get an amazing menagerie in their garden because they put food out constantly. My dog was very confused by the fact that he was mere inches away from a bunch of squirrels who weren't in the slightest bit bothered by his presence due to the patio door between them. They actually tapped on the window whenever the peanuts ran out!

Then at night there were fox cubs and badgers coming into the garden for their nums. Obviously there was a huge variety of birds during the day, too.
