Wildlife related... Yesterday evening I stopped for a walk around Dry Sandford Pit, near Abingdon. I saw what I thought was a strange plant. Some of the more knowledgeable folks on here may recognise it but after some research I discovered it is known, amongst other names, as a Rose bedeguar gall. It is a product of the eggs and grub of the hymenopteran gall wasp. More details here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplolepis_rosae . I think quite amazing!

One of the many times that I stopped on my ride yesterday to take a picture of the view, I glanced down and saw a snake.
(Near Sennen.)
I took a picture but I was leaning over the bike at the time.
It didn't seem to be moving so I put my bike against the fence nearby so I could crouch down for a better angle.
Unfortunately that was enough to send it slithering away fast.
This is a crop of the picture I took. Sadly there is litter in the undergrowth.

From googling, I think it's an adder and it's the first time I've seen one in the wild.

Yes this is an adder. I used to see these regularly as a child as we lived in very rural Hampshire close to heathland. Haven't seen one in many years though.

I've discovered a wood pigeon is nesting in a tree on my allotment. This seems very late in the year? Could she just be resting there?

Nice photo - shame about the litter  I've never seen a snake in the wild in the UK and try to avoid coming across them in Oz when I'm over there!

I have frequently seen this red kite (or one of its relatives) flying over the building in Abingdon where I am working. I timed things well today and happened to pop out at lunchtime with camera in hand as it was circling overhead.

Woodpigeons have a long breeding season. According to this they have been recorded breeding in every month of the year.

On a climb out of Denshaw in the Peak District I saw a Stonechat on a wall near the road

I've never seen one in the Peak District before despite spending a lot of hours in suitable habitat. I assumed they weren't present. A bit of googling suggests they are present. But must be scarce otherwise I'm sure I would have seen them before
