My brother has just phoned me from Lacock saying that he has just seen a Swallow tail butterfly which is unusual for around here.

I'm not sure. It was big, and gave me the willies. I first thought it was a slow-worm in the poor light. But too stumpy. Then I saw it's head. Here's another photo:

It's a bit crimped here but shows the colours better.

One strong memory of when I was a kid was watching Spotlight South West local news one night. As the lighthearted final report they had a kid and his pet duck that followed him everywhere. There was also a bloke who had found what he thought was the UK's largest slug.
Unfortunately they briefly shared the same bit of studio and the duck ate the slug.

Agree. One nice way to separate raptors out for the unsure...
2nd photo shows it nicely, on buzzard you can often see a pale crescent on the chest, quite broad, tapering into the root of the wings.
We get buzzard, red kite and marsh harrier quite commonly round here. Occasionally you're not quite sure they're quite hard to distinguish sometimes.
