I'd get a Focus convertible before a Peugeot for a budget buy, that's just me though. Or buy mine.

If you spend a bit more you could buy my car. I'm very reluctantly selling my 2006 MX5 2.0 Sport due to a company car and having to move house. It is completely mint in every respect, low mileage (43.5K), FSH, second car, always garaged, I'm sure it has never seen a winter. It's also fully rust proofed with dinitrol products. This was the 8th one I looked at, as the others were really ropey. Looks like a 2 year old car in the flesh. Hate letting it go as I know it's an absolute steal for the value that a top notch one of these commands. If I buy a house with a garage I'll probably keep it though, as the depreciation slows right down at this age.
I'm trying to convince Mrs Stephec to have lessons again so I, err I mean she, can have one of those.

Megane. Astra. Volvo C70. MG TF. Saab 9-3. MX5 if unrusty (unlikely). StreetKa (same as MX5 - rust). Smart Roadster. Walking.

...would all be ahead of the Pug.

I had an MG TF a few years ago and although it had a few minor issues, then after a few years blew the gasket twice, I still miss it like stink. It was a fun car for very little money and I'd happily have another one, but again, would have to have the hardtop too. Haven't it was like owning two cars.

Mrs D had a TF when I met her. Popped a head gasket withing a thousand miles of new, and then again within 10,000. She white understandably was glad to be shot of it after that.

Provided the driver doesn't cook the engine, an HG fix is easy, but repeated failures on a new car just isn't cricket.

I enjoy posing in my convertible. I think I make quite an impression.

How about a 986 Porsche Boxster ? They are cheap and if they have good service history turn out to be a cracking buy

I reckon the Boxster is a good call, in a similar way to the 916 Alfa Spider. OK, more than a grand but, buy right look after it and it won't lose any value, quite possibly increase slightly. Not sure the same could be said for a 206
