I reckon the Boxster is a good call, in a similar way to the 916 Alfa Spider. OK, more than a grand but, buy right look after it and it won't lose any value, quite possibly increase slightly. Not sure the same could be said for a 206
Cost of ownership to keep it in good nick's a very different proposition to a £1K car though.

It could be. Buying the right one and staying with after market garages, not main dealers. is the way. I did consider one but ended up with the Alfa.
'Wheeler Dealers' had one on a show - I got the impression there is enough available after market, maybe not MX5 levels but ok.

Interestingly there's not all that much difference between a good Indy like Roy Northway:

...and main dealer pricing (£300 minor/£395 major service fixed price on non-S 986 series)

If stuff like coils start going (1 per cylinder) for instance then things can ramp up pretty quickly (ask me how I know :okay:), and the average garage doesn't see enough of these to trust them to fettle them. I'm sure it's possible, as long as you buy particularly well, but as compared to, say, a TT or Z4, then there's a deal more risk.

So the OP wants to buy a £1k fun car but should buy a £5k moneypit car and factor in 30/40% of the cost of his £1k car just to service it. WTF=Catmuck.

Major thread resurrection.
Well the Peugeot 206cc never happened for me and I've still got my heavy trusty old oil burner Rover. Its still driving beautifully without any issues at the moment but the miles are getting high. Today it reached 160k and it's starting to make me feel uncomfortable knowing that it will inevitably need some serious work in the near future. It's still totally an over kill car for me as I'm still a single guy ,and it's only transporting me back and too to work and a trip to the supermarket at the weekend to which a couple of shopping bags in the huge boot look ridiculous.
Back to the hankering of wanting a Peugeot 206cc another one has caught my attention.
The bosses son has been doing a little bit of car trading this year and every Monday he turns up to work in a new car that he's selling on.
I'll give him his "dues" he's buying some very nice examples and he's not scrimping on preparing them for onward sales.
This week he's turned up with a very nice immaculate Peugeot 206cc.Its a 2003 with only 36,000 miles on the clock.
I'm certainly tempted at the price of £2500

When I retired I sold my beautiful Rover 75 diesel, automatic and downsized to an Astra 1600 auto. The Astra has been trouble free but I regret doing it.....that Rover was such a pleasure to own and drive.
So.... my 2p worth is think seriously before you do it.

The Astras are tough old boots. I always preferred them to the Fucus as police cars. The Foci was a little livelier, a little better on the steering, but they were hideously unreliable in the police environment where wear and tear are reckoned to be up to 20 times that of a regular car.

Conversely, the Astras were a touch steadier and more predictable on the edge and took some hideous punishment without breaking, although I did have one who's gear linkage broke while I was in the middle of a 3 point turn and I ended up blocking a major road in Northampton for an hour while awaiting recovery. I was a popular boy with the locals that day.

The model G astra was my fave. Steady and very safe handling , and the fuel pump on the 1.7 diesel could easily be turned up to give another 15bhp and make them really fly. KX53OHC, where are you now?

You clearly still want one after 5 years so go for it. But remember it’s a 20 years old car for £2500! Seems expensive to me but prices for second hand cars have gone silly recently.
Even with low mileage it could present problems. Especially if kept outside.

I had 2 from new. One was racing green. The only reason I changed was that they offered me an unbelievable deal to do so.
2nd one was metallic red....a real beauty.
Both so easy to drive and park.....my wife loved driving them.
I am getting quite emotional just thinking about them.
