I’ve been to a fair few places, domestic and abroad, and there are definitely worse places to be. Notably a lot greener than some, the country roads are only a short pedal away, and the coast is only 40 miles away, so . . .

I have lived in a few nice places

One certainly nicer than here

But this is nice - town not far away - I can walk it but cycling is easier and only takes a few minutes
cycle paths are quite good - mostly
there is countryside nearby if you know where to go - - I can be cycling in the country in 10 minutes in spite of living in a town with loads of counsel estates and areas of ratehr downmarket housing

We also still have a proper High STreet - at some point (probably by accident) the council made the inspired decision to build and out-of-town type shopping place on the back of the High STreet and put a wide path between the 2
which provides footfall and parking for all the shops
It is degrading slowly but still works and is busy

House is nice and we are at the end of a close - in a sort of curvy separate end bit where everyone knows each other
Counsel estates all round - except to the south where we have trees and then an old golf course (closed due to arsenic pollution - did I mention it was a dump for all the chemical industries??)

anyway - we are probably here until one or both of us dies as it suits us

In terms of places I've been to and can remember, I'd much rather live where I was last week, within a few miles of the west side of Warminster. Seemingly nice chilled little town with a train station, with usually good condition hilly cycling lanes nearby and not far from the Mendips for a "big adventure."

At least SO18 is on the eastern fringe of Southamption, Bitterne village is usually quite peaceful, with countryside and less hostile semi-hilly lanes ~5 miles north east and east. Hate how so often in recent years it's like someone presses a switch, long wet/windy/grey winters; to a short spell of dry 15-20C spring; to a hot 22-37C for most of the summer.

Mother lives on outskirts of Prestatyn, loved cycling inland from there on the hilly lanes and up the likes of Road To Hell when I was lighter and a lot fitter than my current state... But it rains there so often!

Nice Kent village with 2 pubs in walking distance and close to a nice market town for all the usual amenities and a decent commute into London. Plenty of space to rattle around in and a decent slice of land to keep wife and dogs happy. Peaceful enough, friendly neighbours, low crime etc, great views of the surrounding countryside as we're on a bit of a hill. And loads of good pedalling territory.

Escaped to the country from the London 'burbs a few years ago and never looked back.

It's nicer south of Warminster, once you hit Dorset!

We've visited Weymouth, West Bay and Bridport, but I don't remember enough to form an opinion of them!

I keep thinking I must try to do a cycling trip to around Shaftsbury when we're at Longleat CP and for some reason I've never ventured around the Deverills.

If you want / need the amenities of a large town, you will hate it. Good public transport? Forget it!
Village of around 270 houses, 6-8 miles from 3 small market towns. Shop, pub, church, private school. Lots of active clubs etc for those that want.
Cycling wise, literally countryside from the front door (well a few hundred metres away). Can ride south to the coast (West Bay, Portland, Weymouth, Lulworth, Swanage, Christchurch), east towards the Salisbury, Wilton, New Forest, westish to Dorchester, Yetminster, Sherborne, Yeovil, Shepton Mallet, north to Trowvegas, Bradford on Avon, Salisbury Plain, Mendips. Hills if you want, rolling roads if you prefer.
Too many huge tractors on the roads, and morons in pick up trucks (they have moved on from their audi A3s).

Sounds like you need a Gillingham Wheelers Saturday ride next time!

Moved from lovely South Warwickshire to stunning West Somerset nearly 20 years ago with work, recently retired.

As a Coventry kid born and bred, only ever saw the sea in our fortnight's "summer" holiday as a youngster, and always had a hankering to live by the coast down here in the beautiful West Country.

We overlook the beach, with a steam railway running alongside it, with views across Exmoor's highest point (Dunkery Beacon) along to North Hill, Minehead, and in the distance the Welsh Coast.

Small village, no shops, 1 pub, two cafes (one excellent, with attached swimming and gym for just £5 when you're an old git).

Minehead 4 miles along the coast to the West, and Watchet Harbour same to the East. Superb cycling (the only flat roads are on the immediate coastal strip, rest is extremely lumpy) with Exmoor National Park surrounding us inland.

Also walk c150 miles a month with Mrs TB and our dog, mostly along coast path and/or up into Exmoor and Mrs TB paddle boards off the beach (one minute walk from the front door). Car is unused for days at a time.

I'll be here for the rest of my days.

Lovely place to live. Ms AU and I often have a coffee at the Driftwood cafe and then walk to Dunster beach.

Strange to think we may have passed each other.

I like it! it's almost exactly 10 miles from work, there's a tube station 10 minutes walk away, a mainline station 20 minutes walk away, there's plenty of good cycling and walking (although I don't cycle much except to work and back).

Don't forget, its your duty as a new resident to complain about the tourists as if your family has been there 400 years.
