Lucky to have two places I call home, and both are a dream really. The Devon one has hills, sea, Dartmoor, a mild climate and pasties. The other one has friendly Alpine mountains, lovely people and food, semi-Mediterannean climate, and lots of smooth tarmac. Oh, and decent Côtes du Rhône for under £5 a bottle.

Yes, I do. On the edge of a large provincial town so easy access to wide open countryside for cycling. I love the sea and find it good for headspace so I am lucky to have countless mostly deserted beaches within an easy driving distance and some within a couple of hours ride when I have more time in the long evenings. Everything I need (including work) is mostly within walking distance. The town has a great live music scene around the pubs and has a good theatre.

Downsides are the car and boyracer culture and the basically non-existent public transport.

I live in Clackmannanshire, north side of the River Forth. The Ochil hills are right outside my back door. Lots of quite cycling friendly roads. Sea kayaking on the Firth of Forth. The Highlands are only an hour or two away, walking in summer and skiing in winter, well sometimes. An hour to either Edinburgh or Glasgow. I'm very happy far better than my native Leicester city.

Not telling, people might want to move here...

Given I'm looking to move in the next few years it would be helpful if replies included where they lived! Most are going 'it's lovely' with no indication of where on the planet they are.

And no, I'm not recommending Dewsbury despite countryside and hills being less than a mile away from me.

Depends on what you want in life tbh. What I've noticed is that south derbyshire and north West Leicestershire are being expanded massively, so maybe steer clear of them.

I'm in a quiet close in Walton on Thames. 95% friendly neighbours and a great location. I can get the train (SWR permitting) to Waterloo which takes 30 minutes from the station, but can cycle into the countryside proper in about 15 to 20 minutes - we are only a short ride from the North Downs. Kingston and Hampton Court are not far away and neither are Woking or - in an emergency - Staines.

The town is relatively quiet with low crime rates. I have an excellent GP. We are also handy for schools now with a good primary school, a secondary school and a special needs school all within 5 to 10 minutes walk from the house.

In 15 minutes I can walk to the riverside and feed the swans and ducks. There is a small meadow just one street over and another green area around a pond which is usually nice in the summer.

For me it's the perfect point where it's a little bit countryside but you still have easy access to the city, shops etc. The only downside is that it's an expensive area to buy in with a two bed terrace in my little close costing around £450k.

What’s up with Dewsbury?

Generally pretty happy. Could do with better public transport. It is moderate sized village that has a pub, a garage with local shop and a church. Bike rides are in the countryside within 5 minutes in any direction, pleasant neighbours, and within bike commuting dastance of my workplace.

This is in the Vale of Glamorgan

Moved to Poole from inner city brum in '78 after answering a job advert in the Birmingham Evening Mail on a whim.
Over the years Mrs Tkk and I have become the oldest residents in our street 😮. We're fortunate to live on an excellent bus route and we're within walking distance of two SSSI's and a country park. It's a couple of miles to the sea, and if I stand on a chair in the box room I can see the tops of the Purbeck hills 😁
