Our actual location (Boldon, South Tyneside) is good. On edge of urban area, so, access to Countryside, with walking and cycling opportunities. Reasonable access via public transport to two nearby cities (Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Sunderland). Approximately 3 miles from coast. Reasonable to good Road connections, if you want to drive. The downsides are: lack of jobs (not applicable to me, retired); it is an industrial area in advanced decline, so, quite a lot of dross (fortunately, not too near us). The weather is seldom the hottest in UK, but, equally, we seldom get extremes of rain, wind, cold. Although this area has been "home" for my whole life, the lack of job opportunities meant that I travelled far and wide (UK and beyond) for work.

I have lived in a few nice places

One certainly nicer than here

But this is nice - town not far away - I can walk it but cycling is easier and only takes a few minutes
cycle paths are quite good - mostly
there is countryside nearby if you know where to go - - I can be cycling in the country in 10 minutes in spite of living in a town with loads of counsel estates and areas of ratehr downmarket housing

We also still have a proper High STreet - at some point (probably by accident) the council made the inspired decision to build and out-of-town type shopping place on the back of the High STreet and put a wide path between the 2
which provides footfall and parking for all the shops
It is degrading slowly but still works and is busy

House is nice and we are at the end of a close - in a sort of curvy separate end bit where everyone knows each other
Counsel estates all round - except to the south where we have trees and then an old golf course (closed due to arsenic pollution - did I mention it was a dump for all the chemical industries??)

anyway - we are probably here until one or both of us dies as it suits us

I mentioned it on another thread a few years ago about how Widnes had a decent town centre.

I only discovered it by accident when I parked on the big car park near M+S so that I could go to The Works shop,on a weekday afternoon there was plenty of people around, and a good mix of shops.

Compared to where exactly.

Why do I like living in Northern Germany? well hundreds of kilometres of car free gravel roads certainly helps. Along with a wonderful cycling culture where everyone owns a bike and year round people use them as a viable form of everyday transport.

I live on the edge of a lovely town with a large city nearby. I can jump on the bike and ride for hours in complete solitude through the heathland and forests. Living on the continent, I don't. need to worry about booking ferries to travel, I can jump in the campervan and in a few hours be in Holland or France or any other of a dozen different European countries.

Overall, whilst I miss aspects of Britain, my quality of life is so much better here, I can't ever imagine wanting to move back.

Primarily it's because it's where I work.

But Stalybridge is a pretty fine town, equidistance from Manchester city centre and the start of The Pennines, lots of parks, countryside, reservoirs and canal paths together with good transport links, restaurants, shops, cafes and pubs.

It's got a good balance of convenience and quiet.

Primary residence is in Littleborough. Slightly north east of Manchester, absolutely nothing to do with Rochdale and it’s news worthy residents.
Great village, local shops and pubs etc. local country park, Hollingworth Lake which I run around regularly. Quite busy local roads for roadies but the mountain biking around here is immense!
Mary Townley Loop???

We also have a house on Lago Di Como (for the purists) which is excellent for cycling. Granted there are no big ‘cols’ but for every day rides it’s ideal and if you prefer, fairly flat.

The last one is the view from about a 15 metres walk from the front door.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
I live In a great place. Very rural Powys. Few people mainly farms and farmers who are really friendly and helpful. I wouldn't live anywhere else now. I've been here for 25 years and all my family moved here when we did and they would never go back to living in Birmingham for any amount of money.

The only downside is the lack of shops and the distance we have to go to get to them. Plus the summer can be a pain with bikers and holidaymakers as well. Once they have gone for the year, peace returns. Good quiet roads for cycling as well

The only downside is the lack of shops and the...

...werewolves that still roam freely and which terrorise the yokels.

Durham is a pretty good spot to be. Superb road cycling up in the Durham Dales. Not too far to the coast and within striking distance of the Lakes and Northumberland.
The city itself should be better than it is, but there are signs of some gradual improvement.

Carbon fibre... LMAO!!!
Where I live could be a nice place. Right on the edge of town. 15 min walk from the moors and the great outdoors. Parks aplenty. Docs, chemist reasonably close. Local shop.
But....
The people here don't appreciate any of that. They're a bunch of chavy council estate tw*ts with no respect for anything.
I'm routinely disturbed by idiots on dirt bikes racing about. Drivers speed about despite many young family's. And then there's the plebs who have their music banging out in their gardens and dropping litter everywhere.
They all need castrating.

Before I moved here I lived in Llandudno Junction
a new estate on the top of a hill

That was nice - Llandudno close - could be there in 10 minutes on my bike
took a bit longer getting back on it - hence the ebike!

Only moved due to the job situation - I could get jobs in Lancashire/Cheshire/Liverpool but not in North Wales

sorry - not that
Only moved here for love
Just met my now-wife and moved to be closer to her

one of them anyway - I change what I say to suit the circumstances

but I did like North Wales - lived there (in different places) for a fair while and knew my way round
would have stayed if circumstances were different
