Cleaned up my good and commuter bikes, fitted new chains to them and degreased them. I've reapplied the wet wax lube to the good bike chain after washing the degreaser out and drying it but I'm going to use different (supposedly more robust) wet wax lube on the commuter so I'm letting the degreaser sink in a bit before before applying the lube. I have new 11sp and 10sp cassettes but 🤞 I won't need them. I've had wet wax on the good bike for over 5000miles and its not long stretched 🤞 but I'm a bit less confident about the commuter I haven't checked as frequently.

I remember finding them in a mail order paper catalogue that one of the cool MTB kids brought in to school once. I borrowed it nipped in to the photocopying room at school when the tech was on lunch and printed a dozen copies off on the high-speed copiers they had. Then flogged them to the wanna be cool kids for a fiver.

I then used the money to get my dad to give me a cheque to buy a load of this sort of crap

A blast from the past there.

For some reason the rear wheel with the 11-40 on it was not free wheeling so took the cassette off and checked the free wheel mech which was fine.
Then read in the Park Tool Big Blue Book if the screw threads of the cassette for the locking ring are not greased the free wheel can lock up. Trying to understand the mechanics of that but grease applied.

Now the point that the book really got me was it saying to use the chain whip to seat the freewheel. Checked on line and, as I have always done, the use of a chunky spanner to tighten up the locking ring was recommended in the video I looked at with no mention of the chain whip. The book says that is to ensure derailleur adjustments will be correct when the wheel is installed using the chain whip. More mechanical puzzlement.

Anyway whether it was the grease or the better tightness of the lock ring but the free wheel worked and the chain stopped going slack when the pedals were not being turned or back pedalled.

I never knew that book existed, thanks, got one now, handy as reference

It's a bit heavy at times so having others to hand can help when the brain cells are getting mushed up. Often I find one is clear on something whereas the others are bemusing.
Bike Repair Manual by Chris Sidwells being the normal alternative turned to and if that has me still bemused then it time for Bike Repair & Maintenance for Dummies

Was going to remove cranks and BB on my Singlecross and clean it all up, grease and reassemble to see if I could get rid of a little creak. Damaged at least one of the crank threads, crank didn't move but tool did. Given up before I make it worse, might need to get a three leg puller on it (haven't got one). Might be able to get the puller back in for another go- but that's not an evening job. Grrrr.

The cranks are well attached and the BB is fine so no hurry.

Fitted new chains to two of my bikes on Sunday. There was no skipping of the best bikes chain on Monday but as I suspected the commuter bike's chain skipped quite a bit so it needed a new cassette.

When I was at it, I finally got round (no pun intended) to putting the matching wheel on (to do so probably meant I had to change the 28mm tyre for a 25mm to clear the guards so I did). A spoke on the front Fulcrum 7 snapped last year and as a quick fix I swapped it for a Fulcrum Quattro (changing the 28mm tyre for a 23mm to clear the front guard which is constrained by the fork). I had meant to swap in the rear Quattro but hadn't got round to swapping its 28mm. I might have got away with the 28mm but I didn't have time for 'trial and error'.

Finished my dynamo tubeless 406 wheel build. It hasn’t taken all these days, I have just been busy since my last update. This last stage was just an hour. Nice and true, stress relieved, and spoke tensions in the right range. Just added new connector to dynamo light wire ends and spun wheel in truing stand to check that all works.

Tomorrow I’ll just double check no spoke tensions are too high, and back them off if necessary. Then rim tape and tube and tyre. Plus remount dynamo light on bike. I haven’t ordered the tubeless tyre and sealant yet. That can wait. Going to order some Tesla tape

I’ve ordered a matching rear rim, and black Shimano centre lock deore hub. My old rims are internal width 18mm, the new one 21mm. Should give a nicer profile with the tyre widths I run.

I’ll likely keep my old wheels as my winter set.

Fitted rim tape, tube, and new (old) tyre, and been for a test run. Silence is golden. Silence is what you want during a test ride of a wheel you’ve recently built, no unwinding of nipples, no pinging of spokes, no wheel pringling. Even new disc rotor is silent, where as one on old wheel had slight rub. Likely indicating old rotor is worn and warped. The silence was nice, and shows I did a good job on the wheel, always worth taking extra time and having patience, as there’s rarely a rush with your own builds.

Rim is tubeless but if I’m going to go tubeless on recumbent I want both wheels the same setup. Tubes and tyre it is for now.
