What Have You Fettled Today?

A better releasing agent may help. We have been testing a range at a mates car garage and the Bilt Hammer one is good for the price and Sea foam is good, but expensive.

I fettled my bike-washing hose!

I leave the hose out in my back yard all year round but forgot to drain it last winter. It froze and the ice broke the plastic fittings on both ends. A friend bought some spare fittings round when she came over to do a mountain bike ride with me today. Good job because the bikes were covered in crud when we got back. Having the hose working again made the bike cleaning a very quick job.

Thats the shortest Ive had out of a shifter cable. Its maybe because I've abandoned ERG on the turbore and I am shifting instead on trainer intervals. I felt the frayed wire a few weeks ago but given I was going on holiday I left it for today. Yesterday I picked up some 35deg TT extensions from a mate. So that spurred me to fit the right extension today and replace that frayed cable. I still need to fit the left extension but I only had one gear cable. I'm pretty eager to do that but I think the lbs will be closed.

My other fettle was to add a 3/4 inch dia spacer to my rear axle to hopefully give the QR more bite and stop the disc wheel pulling forward in the drive dropout and rubbing.

Edit: after a eventually successful tubeless sealant spray yesterday. I stuck another circa 15ml in the tyre to replace it, but thats just a 2min job and barely counts as fettling.

I also cleaned, greased and re-lubed the cleats on my commuter mtb shoes I suspect thats where the squeak was enimating from one of the bolts was loose. It might also be the source of the mild discomfort in one of my knees either that I need to change from multi release cleats to regular horizontal release cleats.

Gave in and fitted the left TT extension reusing the existing gear cable to the front mech. It means the end cap fits without room for slacking, but I can train on the bike and have time for gremlin hunting before my next TT. I was going to make it temporary but I'd forgotten the internally routed cable to the front mech was more tricky. So I'll leave it suboptimal until it fails. Typically I remembered the technique (actually re worked it out) after an hour of faffing 🙄

I knew I should have said no to this...

A client came and asked me to fix her bike tyre. She did this about seven times while I was away from the workshop so to avoid my team being driven a bit potty I said they should wait for me.
I can do small repairs for clients but they have to pay the same as a customer with no discount on new parts or labour. The client wanted a new tube and used tyre; the change was no problem but as soon as I put it back on the bike I found the luggage rack attachment was so close to the nut I couldn't turn it on one side. To 'solve' this someone had just mounted the wheel slightly crooked. I solved it by swearing then getting out the Big File and filing about 4mm off the luggage rack stays.
The clients cultural background is one that doesn't always encourage women to ride bicycles; it was noticeable that she insisted on riding away through the warehouse so everyone including her supervisor could see her...

When washing my bike after returning from holiday I noticed the rear tyre was showing signs of wear and squaring off . Checking my records I discovered it had done just nearly 7000 miles so time for a new one . I had been running a Pirelli Cinturato 28mm on the back a excellent all round tyre but fancied something racier not that it will make me much quicker . So purchased a pair of Pirelli Race . The front tyre had done 8500 miles and still showed no sign of wear but I fitted a gaint gavia tyre during a lockdown in 2021 as it was a direct replacement for what came with the bike so I knew it would fit no problem which mattered as it was my first go at fitting tubeless tyres . The Gavia tyre is ok and do the job but I was never overly happy with them compared to the continental tyres I ran on my other bike .
Anyway both wheels stripped new rim tape and valve fitted to the front as these were original from 2019 , rear was done on last tyre change both tyres fitted and seated ,sealant installed with no hassle and holding pressure ( let's see over night )
Lbs only had 26mm variants of the tyre so be interesting to see if I notice and difference with the rear going 2mm narrower but the front going 1mm wider .
For all you with cycling OCD at least it's a matching pair now
Doing a sportive at the weekend expect to be a lot faster now as the tyres have Race on them 😂

Forgot to mention first time using a newish Joe blow pump which can remove and reinstall the valve core with the pump head connected also has 2 settings low pressure high volume and high pressure low volume which made seating the tyres a doddle

I finally installed new ultegra rear D on my 105 bike, except I didn't. Checked my new chain length x3 but new D (it's the larger medium ultegra which should work with 11speed ultegra 11-34 cassette) interfering with cassette.

I did new rear cable with new internal routing too, so checked tension, and chain. The B screw is right in, feels like there's something goofy with the hanger, that it may need a different type as the ultegra R8000 D is different shape to R7000 105. Checked giant website and it doesn't appear so...any bike boffins got tips?

Hmm...so put back on the 105 and shifting like a dream.
I noticed a little wobble to crank, investigated and found non drive side bearing running rough, so ordered a new complete bb71 pressfit, will change it out

Now I have the ultegra front & rear Ds in box, one of the house bikes has older ultegra so will keep as spare if I can't figure it out
