I had a very disappointing small cod and chips from the usually decent chippy last night. The fish was mostly skin and batter, the cat enjoyed the few bits of fish I gave him. Chips were ok and plentiful but at £7.50 costly! It had got late, but I should have just chucked the oven on at home and done fishfingers and oven chips  (or stumped up another £2 for a large cod in the hope there was a decent amount of fish)

Our local (well, one of them, we have at least 4, being a seaside location) are charging £10.90 for cod or haddock with chips!

Fish works, Largs.

In it's defence, it has won some awards. But in my experience it is not a lot better than the others, and certainly nowhere near as good as a fresh piece of haddock from our very good local fish shop, done in the frying pan with breadcrumbs, with home made chips in the air fryer. Done for less than half the price.

I've noticed a decline in the quality of takeaways in the last 2 years. They all seem to be cutting corners. There are a few (the chippy in my place of birth) who have remained excellent but raised their prices a bit, I don't mind that. But some have gone downhill very quickly and are still charging the same or more. We only get about 1 every couple of months now

Is that takeaway or eat in? The £7.50 is takeaway, eat in must be £11 odd now.

I don’t have room for an air fryer so that’s not an option

My nearest chippy (couple of miles away up the road in the village proper) is middling at best, and not that cheap. They put their prices up just before Covid hit, and that was the last time I got something from there. They do play to a captive audience though, as none of the (somewhat) better takeaways in town will deliver this far out into the boonies, and collection takes all the convenience away.

Am another one who crumbs or batters their own fish now, and I have a small deep fat fryer that I used for chips. I *am* rather naughty insomuch that I fry my chips in beef dripping, but in my defence, it's actually somewhat cheaper than using solid vegetable fat. The latter has nearly doubled in price in the last year or so.

One of our 'award winning' chippies is rubbish now. Tiny fish, and chips taste like they are frozen chips.

I made the mistake of going in earlier this week. Super slow service too. The one in the next village is much better.

Takeaway, they don't have the option to eat in. So you then have the added bonus of fighting off the aggressive seagulls for ownership of your gold plated fish & chips.

Not per se priced out of my budget, but certainly something I have stopped buying for the meantime, is ready to serve custard. It’s now 70p a pot, for the cheapest, compared to 5 for £2 not that long ago.

You can get a whole tin for about that, just need a tin opener!
