What film did you watch last night?

Annihilation on Netflix. Seems to have some good reviews on here, but I thought it was total pap. Unable to suspend my disbelief. 3/10

Manchester by the Sea on Amazon Prime. Overly long and dreary - just seemed to fizzle out at the end with no real resolution to the story. 4/10

Borg vs McEnroe on Amazon Prime. Never really gripped my attention. Average. 5/10

Five Card Stud on Freeview. Probably the best of the 4 films I watched yesterday due to being housebound by the crap weather. 6/10

Transformers - The Last Knight

With a bit of luck - it will be the last movie in this franchise too.

Whoever was in charge of continuity in this film should be shot. Previous ones were bad, but this one is almost deliberately terrible.

In one scene, a girl is running down a street and her clothes change - three times between shots

Another scene jumps straight from "planning" into "half way though" a fight scene.

The robot butler was more "Jekyll & Hyde" than Russell Crowe (even in real life) but for no apparent reason

Humans mistrust Transformers so much that they decide (again) to enlist the help of Megatron and some friends to get rid of them. WTF ?

This "showdown"starts in the middle of a deserted city, and several seconds later, ends up in a deserted town with no buildings more than two storeys high.

After this short and very confusing chase and fight scene, he then goes missing for most of the film and (to be honest) as superfluous to the plot anyway.

All this, plus an underlying plot that's been done to death (even by this very franchise) makes me give this film 3/10

A couple of attempts at humour, including several by Sir Antony Hopkins, were more cringe-worthy than funny, which made me think back to Micheal Cane's remark - "If you want a better quality of life, you sometimes have to make a lower quality of movie". That being the case, Sir Antony must have a very lavish lifestyle indeed.

I gave up on the Transformers films after the first one, which was pretty much Meghan Fox swanning around wearing very little.

I'm sure I read that they've put the franchise on hold with a view to "re-booting" it, which will take a miracle as Michael Bay has done his absolute best to ruin it.

Wonder Woman.

Yes, the star is very attractive. Yes, it's nice to see a female in a starring role. But, but, but...the film itself lacks substance, has fairly mediocre CGI, and is a standard issue paint-by-numbers super hero(ine) film with no especially redeeming features.

5/10.

The Duff

Typical high school chick flick

I didn't go looking for it - Mrs V put it on the TV and I had to sit through it

I found it surprisingly entertaining

Some funny bits in it too, especially the cut-away mono-logs - much in the same style as "Scrubs"

7/10

I'm two thirds of the way through this now. Bloody hell what a mess!
Yes, seen the desert town that changes to Manhattan and back again. The soldiers that fought with the bots are now trying to kill off anyone around them - and the early scene tall hair looked scarier than Megatron. Who by the way could just rescue his mates instead of chatting with lawyers. We've got the Borg queen rip-off, the pornographically pretty Megan Fox clone (sorry, you're probably a very nice person but that's why they hired you. But at least you're not just screaming and running).
Yes it's suspension of disbelief, great fun, just leave your brain at the door stuff, but cripes it's just too long. It makes No Country for Old Men feel like a commercial break.
Well the big underwater space ship thingy is now arriving at Stonehenge so I'll see what happens over the weekend.

4/10 so far.

Peter Rabbit.
My 6 year old son loved it. Which is what counts.
It was a departure from the original books. Paddington was a better adaptation.
James Corden was the voice of Peter rabbit which didn’t work for me.

Because I am bored, I looked up the running times of the Transformers films vs. No Country for Old Men.

The shortest Transformers is 21 minutes longer than No Country, 143 mins and 122 respectively.

The longest Transformers, Age of Extinction, is 165 mins!

As I'm out of the UK until next month I have to wait to make a start on April.

PS. I am yet to get back to cycling I think something may be getting in my way. Can't think what though? LOL

Edge of Darkness. Workmanlike performance by an ageing Mel Gibson, but the movie as a whole is a bit of a mess - flabby, disjointed, lacklustre script and a general feel of editing butchery in an ultimately failed attempt to give it some kind of narrative structure and coherence. Not awful, just a bit blah. 6/10?
