Star Wars: The Last Jedi ----- Im not the biggest most hardcore SW fan in the universe so I kinda thought it was OK. Rogue One was better im my opinion. The Last Jedi just felt a little lifeless and at certain points of the movie it was like it didnt know if it wanted to be a serious movie or a movie with some comedic flare like in Rogue One.

2001 : A Space Odyssey.

An absolute visual and aural masterpiece. 50 years old this year, and could have been made yesterday.

10/10.

That's all very well but what is it about then ?

Joking aside it does still look stunning and I'd love to see it at the pictures

Couple of films this last week or so:

Black Panther - once I'd realised it wasn't in fact a biography of Malcolm X it really rather good and far better than I'd expected, quite apart from the "significance" of nearly an all black cast in a mainstream film with the white folks fairly minor characters. Looked fantastic, well acted and able to suspend disbelief and enjoy the ride. I particularly liked the way the wakanda culture was portrayed - different from our own, but with its own codes and traditions. Even the fights were pretty good without too much superhero daft ness.

And a screening of The Third Man in a local wine cellar. Seen it quite a few times before but still saw new things. A true masterpiece and one of those perfect 10/10 films. A bit of a novelty event in that they had 4 brief intervals and served a glass of wine in each, so it was quite a convivial evening if a bit poncy.

Jungle Book (live action) - 5/10

Some very impressive CGI but "real" talking animals aren't my thing, though Christopher Walken as King Louie was a highlight as was Scarlett Johansson's Kaa.

My second most local indie cinema is starting a Bad Film Club, which I think is a great idea. First three screenings are of Vampire's Kiss, Road House and A World Cup Special: United Passions.

A screening of The Room is almost inevitable, and I'd like to see Killer Tongue on the big screen. Anyone have any other suggestions?
