The Shape of Water - Hmm... not really sure what to think. Beautifully shot, occasionally brilliant, often shocking, but can't help thinking I could have done a lot more useful things with that 120 minutes... certainly wouldn't bother watching it again

Saw it last night, basically Creature from the Black Lagoon meets Beauty & the Beast. Good movie, great cinematography, moody 1950's cold war atmosphere etc. Being a Del Torro movie, occasional nudity & short bursts of violence/gore. Guy playing the CIA (?) interrogator was a really nasty piece of work (and superbly played). And Stargate Atlantis fans will be pleased to see that 'Rodney' is in it looking very much like Gene Hackman about 1970.

SPOILER ALERT :stop:: The scene where they flood the bathroom up to the ceiling was just daft as the weight of water would probably have collapsed the ceiling, burst the door and what about shorting any electrics out?.

I loved the fact that you got to learn more about the Predator. You see his weapons up close and, moreover, you see more of him.
This movie is responsible for the terrible Alien vs Predator, which IMHO, is the worst ever Hollywood franchise crossover pile of poo. In the scene where Danny Glover gets into the predator ship, one of the skull 'trophies' on the wall is a xenomorph from Alien. It was just a set-dressing gag, but they got a movie out of it.

Adventureland - an amiable enough but essentially pointless and shapeless romcom about a relationship between a pleasant but unremarkable young couple who happen to work at a theme park called Adventureland. One of those movies that, while inoffensive, makes you wonder how it ever got made.

Salmon fishing in the Yemen - again, a rather flabby and pointless romcom, this one loosely strung round a bonkers plot about a sheikh who's decided that what his desert-living people really lack is fly-fishing opportunities. The plot has more holes than a fishnet, but it passes the time pleasantly enough I suppose.

Either that or Freddy vs Jason.

I remember seeing the xenomorph skull, but didn’t realise that that in-joke caused AvP.

i enjoyed AVP too... loved the mythology of it all.

edited to add... AVP Requiem however, was utter pants... I'd have rather they made Predator vs ET instead

Shrek 4 - 6/10

Dreamworks do the decent thing and stop the franchise before it gets embarrassing. Nowhere near as good as the first, or second, but miles better than the truly dire third installment and all things considered a decent sign off for the onion enthusiast.

After the Predator chat I went on a charity shop hunt for this.

Chopper.

Eric Bana's breakthrough role as the murderous Australian loon. For those that don't know the character, Mark Brandon "Chopper" Read was an Australian criminal who had some (by his standards) scruples - he didn't like drug dealers, and is reckoned to have murdered as many as 20 of them, although he was convicted of none. In prison he chopped his own ears off because he fancied a cushy stay on a psychiatric ward.

Read died recently of hepatitis related kidney failure. He turned down a transplant, claiming there were far more worthy recipients than himself.

Anyway, Bana porked out for the role and really looked the part. The screenplay is violent and bloody, but does emphasise the faintly ridiculous and tragic way Read chose to live his life.

And who can for get the classic line, "I used to be someone in this town - now I can't even get f*****g arrested!"?

8/10. Strangely compelling viewing.
