Salt. Acting that makes Ian Beale look like Gieulgud, and 2nd rate weapons drills make this a turgid, mindless actioner that pretends to be more of a thriller than it really is.

3/10.

Ex Machina. Written & directed by Alex Garner - he of The Beach - a smart and well-executed riff on the Turing test, featuring a cyber-babe & a geeky programmer, whose developing relationship is enabled, witnessed and manipulated by a genuinely sinister super-brain character - 'the coder behind the world's #1 search engine'. Clever plotting and scripting keep the tension ratcheting up, heading for a cracking denouement.

The Blind Side:

I had seen it before but fancied watching it again. I love it. Middle-class white family take in a huge black kid from the projects. Heart warming, and Sandra Bullock is well fit

Cop Land.

I've reviewed it before on this hallowed thread, but this gave me time to further reflect. Great film, glittering cast of Liotta, Keitel, DeNiro, Patrick, Stallone, but most of all what a subtle performance Stallone delivers, and how sympathetic his acting is to the character. Nuanced, subtle, the dumb hick town sheriff who may not be bright but, he's a thinker and he isn't blind, and is more determined than his adversaries give him credit for.

An intelligent thriller, well scripted and brilliantly acted. 9/10.

Outside of the Rocky films, it's one of Stallone's best.

The Cloverfield Paradox
Netflix

Half way through I thought I’m not really sure what kind of movie this is. Sci fi, sure...horror or comedy, maybe?

One thing is for sure - there is a lot going on here. Some of it adds up, some of it may be a little dicey.

I don’t know, but I’m guessing from the title that the events of this movie are the cause of the events in the Cloverfield disaster movie from a few years back...only in a parallel universe, or ‘dimension’ as the terminology of this movie chooses somewhat incorrectly.

It’s good, well produced, well acted, but a few scenes seem a little under budget.

Suspension of disbelief gets a little thin on the ground as the movie transcends from the apocalyptic towards Event Horizon via the comedy series Black Books and a dose of Pacific Rim/Godzilla...in the end it’s a bit of a headscratcher and that’s probably why I liked it.

I’ll give it a recommendation...maybe 7.6/10?

Watch. Maybe with a beer.
