Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women (1968)... the title says it all really, busty blonde Venusian women with seashell bras, visitors from earth in funky space suits and a really cool space car...

Daft, shambolic but fun in a cheesy kind of way.

Red Planet Mars (1952)... if anyone's familiar with Freq. Nasty's bass heavy Boomin' Back Atcha, this is where the samples came from. Starts out well. Scientists trying to communicate with Mars finally get a reply (rather than their own messages boomin' back)... and Earth's economy begins to collapse (not sure why). Then it goes down a peculiar religious route when the Earthlings believe that the Martians worship God too... and all is well in the world again.

Both on YouTube.

Blade Runner 2049 - 9/10

Believe the hype, this is excellent. Two mild irks - the "just in case you hadn't got it" flashbacks, and way too much CGI, so it lacks the physical feel of the original. Those are very minor complaints about a visual and aural feast. Going again next weekend, hopefully to see it in iMax.

A lovely feel good filum :okay: It's been on my agenda for a long time but I've never got round to it, then it happneed to be on this afternoon and I'm very glad I watched it.

Highly recommended in today's world of violence, horror, gore and shock cinema.
Aye - it's a cracker.

Les Diaboliques - a French film I'd half-heard of but knew nothing about, and mon dieu! Fantastique! Genuinely spooky, beautiful black and white cinematography, superb acting all round, a great plot that keeps you guessing. Like Hitchcock, but better...much better. Huit, maybe even neuf.

The Void (2016) A decent Canadian horror film with strong nods to 1980s body horror (Hellraiser, John Carpenter, HP Lovecraft...). 7/10

Was poorly, so managed to watch a few from my sick bed.

The Thing (2011 prequel)
Prequels of much loved films are always difficult to pull off, but I think this is as good as it could have been.
Enjoyable, scary, decent effects, and the usual guesswork about who is infected. Decent.

Hell or High Water
Very very good. Chris Pine and Ben Foster were good, but as you would expect Jeff Bridges stole every scene. Highly recommended.
7.9 /10

War for the Planet of the Apes
I liked it. I liked Rise a lot, and liked Dawn even more. This was not as good as Dawn. Totally amazing ape effects, utterly compelling.

The Crazy Family. I'd heard it was this weird cult Japanese movie but weird doesn't come close. Deranged, perhaps. Totally, awesomely, bonkers. And quite brilliant. I've never seen anything like it, and neither have you. Unless you've seen it.

Guillermo Del Toro's take on a sort of gothic romance. It doesn't have the over the top visual inventiveness of Hellboy, or Pan's Labyrinth (and it would be out of place here) but there's more than enough odd, decaying gorgeousness in the frames to satisfy. It draws on a certain type of melodrama (ingenue is tricked into a dangerous situation by the machinations of a charming schemer) which means that you'll see some of the plot coming, but personally, it was so well played, and so satisfying to the eye that I didn't care. Worth catching.
