Girl on The Train
I liked the idea, and it was competently executed, but all of the characters were either peanuts or totally damaged, which made it hard for me to engage with them.
Still pretty good though.

Guardians of the Galaxy
In preparation for seeing vol 2 at the cinema tonight.

I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang. An interesting period piece - effectively a Hollywood assault on chain gangs and, by extension, the medieval ways of the Deep South, set in the post WW1 era, long before any notion of civil rights. Looked its age, but worth the watch. PS Just went for a look on IMDB, to discover it's a true story, based on a book written by a man who escaped twice and was living in New Jersey, whence Georgia was still trying to extradite him, when the film was made.
great film with an excellent ending :okay: had no idea it was based on a true story.

Nightcrawler. Very good. Jake Gyllenhaal convincing and compelling as a kind of borderline autistic, utterly amoral and highly intelligent Los Angeles loner/outsider who chances into the trade of videoing crime scenes - the bloodier the better - to sell to breakfast television news shows. Great script, punchy direction (from the guy who wrote the script) and excellent performances, particularly Gyllenhaal's. 8/10.

Alien - The Covenant

All right I suppose, ticks all the boxes. Will have to watch Prometheus again now to understand its subtleties, if indeed it had any....

6/10

I don't think plot is the strong point of either, but Covenant looks great (as you'd expect from R-S) and unlike Promethius the crew aren't blithering idiots doing stupid things as if they're in a slash & stalk B movie. Hey they even seem to be professional astronauts rather than a gang of misfits. Of course they mostly get eaten by monsters but that is hardly a spolier.

Blade Runner it ain't but all in all pretty good.

Fair Game, CIA WMD Iraq thriller based on the true story of Valerie Wilson and how if you don't toe the line The System will shut you down. Lead actors are first rate, Sean Penn is excellent and Naomi Watts (Mulholland Drive) puts in a fine performance. First rate stuff.

Not as action packed as the first two solo movies (didnt like the second movie much either...) but what a great final adventure for a legendary character. The ending is a bit of a tear inducer if youre a fan of the X-men franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume 2

If you liked the first one, you'll like it. First rate script, very funny, particularly from Drax.
Plot perhaps a bit too mystical magic for my liking, and inevitably lacks the unexpected punch of the first, but a lot of fun.

The other night- Gog2 slow start and perhaps not as engaging as 1 which was more magnificent 7esque.

Also last night, Collosal

Didn't really understand if it was a parable about the harm caused by alcoholism, bullying or sexism...or a really daft sci-fi attempt. I spent too much time trying to work it out and just stopped enjoying it.

White House Down.

Appalling weapons drills, one guy repeatedly racking a pump action shotgun without firing it and no cartridges are ejected. Awful weapons continuity, guy puts a part-stainless SIG229 on the desk, and when he picks it up its become a Beretta M9 in military blue finish. Javelin anti tank rockets portrayed as anti aircraft weapons. Dreadful, dreadful, dreadful.

1/10, and it only got that because Maggie Gyllenhaal was in it.

Nocturnal Animals. Jake Gyllenhaal again, though I didn't know when I decided to watch it. Excellent again. This time in one of the most ingeniously plotted films I've seen since I don't know when. Impeccable script, great performances, tight direction, ravishing cinematography. Top, top movie. The kind where you end up not moving all the way thru' the final credits because you need a minute or three to return to reality.
