I'm not really sure how to rate this. Some parts are genius, it's got an amazing cast and the soundtrack is class. Plus it's a really hard book to interpret.

However, some bits make no sense, the effects are a joke (this was only a year before Terminator, still learning I suppose) and the amount of fog used was ridiculous.

5/10 seems fair.

Red River. Classic old school western with John Wayne driving cattle out of Texas to money in the north after the civil war has left the south destitute. Great cast, great script, great direction, and a real (albeit obviously highly dramatised) evocation of time & place. A good solid 8/10.

It's *really* '80s, and you have to make your peace with that to appreciate it, I think. I like it a lot, although I freely admit that it's been a while since my last watch.

It's super totally 80s, and I do love it for that.

It had been a while since my last viewing too, I think I'd forgotten the amount of fog and this time was thinking 'Yeah, you're using that to hide a half-built set' rather than 'Yeah, who cares if you've not quite finished the background, this is still awesome!'

Copycat - 7/10

Very neat serial killer copycat investigation effort from the 90s.

At first I'd dismissed this as "Se7en with women/a tribute to Silence of the Lambs", but as it progressed I realised that was unfair. Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter in the lead roles are superb, Weaver especially.

There are some weird pacing issues and bits that don't fully make sense, but overall it's really good. I suppose another criticism would be it looks like different stock has been used so some bits look quite dated.

Still, recommended.

Night of the Living Dead (1990 remake) - 7/10

I fully expected this to be pish, but Savini has been faithful to a pioneering classic (and one of my favourites) while managing to put his own spin on the story.

I read that Romero asked him to do it, presumably because the colour release of the original exposes so many shonky effects. It was also cool to see Barbara realised as a badass.

Heat - 9/10

My second favourite film with the word 'Heat' in the title.

Brilliant performances all round, I especially like Val Kilmer who I've always felt is underrated (check out Salton Sea for one of his best). The scene between Pacino and De Niro in the cafe is bristling machismo at its best, or worst depending on your viewpoint.

Next up is Hateful Eight. I'd hoped to see it in the ridiculous 3 hour with an intermission version but apparently that's only good enough for tourists in London...

I like it too, John. I just like the style of most Michael Mann's films, more so from the 80's. I can understand why somebody wouldn't like it though, He's got his own style that I really like,. Manhunter is my favourite 80's film that he directed. I also love The Last Of The Mohicans, and Heat (from the 90's).
