The Lady in the Van

A rare trip to to the cinema with Mrs M and the youngest, so a consensus choice.

This was good though - gently humourous, with the odd laugh out loud moment, and Maggie Smith is just great.

Tin Pot

Guru
November Man

Not totally sure what was going on there but Hubster enjoyed it. If I had not been doing a crossword while it was on, I might have had more idea as to what was happening.

Watching it now. Crossword or no, I get your point(!)

Lots of things happening, lots of irrelevant information. But good cast and acting.

Last night's music themed movie marathon started with:

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1967) - An aspirational window cleaner follows a self help book to get ahead in life. After blagging a mail-room job, he lies, connives, bum-licks, smarms, eavesdrops, sings, crawls and dances his way from the mail room to the boardroom. Top stuff!

Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989) - a Finnish band travel to America to find an audience after failing to 'crack' Siberia. This daft road movie is more than a little evocative of The Blues Brothers, but that's not to its detriment. Well worth a look if alternative comedy, big quiffs and pointy footwear is your thing.

A Mighty Wind (2003) - Probably my Favourite of Christopher Guest's mockumentary films which follows three folk groups to a tribute concert for their recently deceased record label boss. Utterly charming, utterly brilliant and in my mind, faultless.

Phantom of the Paradise (1974) - A musical horror based on Phantom of the Opera directed by Brian De Palma. Initially a flop but quickly gained cult status... and i can see why; it's utter shite and completely fabulous in equal measure... but being the 4th film in one night, i was more than happy to see the end credits roll.

On a flight back from foreign climes I watched 4 movies.
First up was Danny Collins with All Pacino . A fantastic movie in every sense. The story of an aging Rock star, probrably based on Neil Diamond. Loved it. @threebikesmcginty I can imagine you would enjoy it too...

Watched it, yeah it's good stuff; bit sugary in places, bit cheesy in others. Al Pacino is great fun, hamming it up all the way, very enjoyable film.

Hey baby doll...

Aguirre, Wrath of God

Beautifully filmed (that opening shot as the column of men wind their way down a mountain path) tale of greed, paranoia and ambition.

The Lives of Others

Wonderful story about a Stasi operative in East Germany, who allows himself to become too involved in the lives of the people he surveils. Great performances from the two central characters, and the feeling of caprice in the way the state operates, carelessly destroying lives, reminded me at times of Solzhenitsyn.

King & Country - a real period piece from 1964. A stark, bleak telling of a tragic tale: the trial of a simpleton, court martialled for desertion after three years in the trenches. "I just wanted to walk away from the guns...be alone for a bit." A very theatrical filiming of a play, shot in b/w, with excellent performances from Tom Courtenay and Dirk Bogard, and impeccable support from a collection of mostly unknowns. Great British cinema from when the expression really meant something.

Having managed to avoid it for a long time, as I utterly hate Disney "princess" movies where the protagonist's only motivation is to ensnare and marry a prince, I watched Frozen with my 3yo daughter (and, after some protesting, my 7yo son)

It was much much better than I was expecting - 2 strong female lead characters, with complex (by Disney standards) motivations. Interesting storyline, well acted, and even the songs were catchy. 7/10

Tangled is also a cracker... yes she gets the guy and becomes a princess... but she's single minded and strong willed and the things she can do with her hair...!

Try "The Princess and the Frog" too - I loved that one.

Anyroad, I watched "The Cimmarron Kid"

I have a real soft spot for these Audie Murphy westerns, but even I have to admit that this is no "Destry Rides Again". Framed by crooked Railroad cops, Audie falls in with a bad crowd - a solid early '50s western, but not in the top rank.

Friday.. I watched Men in Black so I could go to a 90's themed fancy-dress party on Saturday night with the right vibe.
