A Most Violent Year. Period thriller set in 1981 and centred around the heating oil industry and one man's struggle with the skulls and duggery against his family and workers, and thugs pinching his oil. Quite nicely done and beautifully shot. It's a bit lacking in places but well worth a watch I rec.

John the Monkey

Horizons West

Angels with Dirty Faces set in the old west, I guess. Two brothers return from the civil war, one becomes a ruthless cattle baron/rustler, one a marshall. Not the best of the old westerns I've seen, but not terrible either.

Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Mission impossible. Rogue nation. I really enjoyed it. Yes it's one of those again, but it was well done, entertaining and easy to watch. 8 /10.

Dune, a bit of a mess and clumsy with unconvincing voiceovers for the characters' inner thoughts, and bizarre and confusing departures from the book, but looks good and has occasional touches of greatness. I have a soft spot for Dune for all its failings

I enjoyed Looper the other night... not great but it filled a couple of hours... 5/10 i guess.

This week though, i have mostly been watching Knights of God. A 1987 kid's drama set in a dystopic future starring the detective from An American Werewolf in London, the 2nd Doctor, the bloke who played Blake in Blake's 7, Don Henderson and the bloke who gave us Downton Abbey... it's actually quite good! (Knights of God, not Downton)

On a flight back from foreign climes I watched 4 movies.
First up was Danny Collins with All Pacino . A fantastic movie in every sense. The story of an aging Rock star, probrably based on Neil Diamond. Loved it. @threebikesmcginty I can imagine you would enjoy it too.

Second up was American Sniper. I thought this would be your standard American flag waving fare... But it was actually very good. Gritty and gripping with none of the Yankee doodle dandy nonsense.

Third up was Mad Max. Fury Road. I so desperately wanted to enjoy this movie being a huge fan of both the original movies and the actor Tom Hardy. Damn I was disappointed. A car chase can only hold a movie for so long. Well filmed but little on substance.

Last up was Terminator Genysis. I knew this would be crap and I was proved right.

I thoroughly enjoyed Fury Road... it would have been disappointing if they had tried to give a Mad Max film 'substance'... i think that's what they tried in Thunderdome and it was a disaster. Fury Road is little more than the 2nd half of Mad Max 2... but it's every bit as much fun (IMHO).

I know what you are saying Monty. But they put everything into a chase rather then a story. It was fun and the effects were good but was expecting more. Nicholas Hoult was good in it.
