Went to see Spectre at the cinema.
Good stuff, up there with the better Bond films.
As usual though, I'm left wondering why the villain doesn't put a bullet in Bond's brain as soon as he's been captured.

by creating the very contrived revenge motive that gave motivation for the equivalent of the "indescribably slow lowering device" into the metaphoric shark pool and explain vilainous plans in great detail first, rather than just shooting him in the head.

It's part of the recipe anyway

La Vie en Rose. I remember when this came out people raving about the singing of the lead and how uncannily like Piaf it was. Now I know what they were talking about. And not just the singing. Absolutely staggering central performance. Marion Cotillard take a bow. Was ever an Oscar so richly deserved...

Last night i watched Troll Hunter; a Norwegian film about er... a troll hunter. As daft as the premise sounds, it's a cracking little film.

Troll Hunter is brilliant. Given the seriously limited budget they've produced some amazing effects. Apparently a remake is on the cards, but Neil Marshall is rumoured to be involved so it might actually be good...

Another great Scandi beastie effort is Rare Exports. It'll probably be on Film4 around Christmas.

The recent Man from U.N.C.L.E. effort.

Unengaging characters, uninteresting plot all makes for a thoroughly boring two hours

Reece Witherspoon, personal discovery journey.
Watchable but I'd not bother with a second viewing. I doubt it will inspire me to read the book either, which will undoubtedly be better.

...or mentioning in passing that the secret base's power plant is ever so slightly vulnerable and could go into overdrive/meltdown/hyperblast and destroy the entire secret island from which all dastardly deeds will be launched.

you mean having a "more power" lever with a "red zone" which causes the base to blow up. Surely SPECTRE would have recruited an 'elf-n-safety (gorn maad) operative who would have insisted on a fuse or safety valve, or even not allowing the lever to be moved into the "blow up the base zone"

The Horse Soldiers

Rather ordinary John Wayne business, with a slightly troubling scene in which the cadets of a confederacy military school charge Wayne's experienced soldiers, played for laughs, and a fair bit of other stuff that fairly shrieks "It was a different time! Don't judge me!" In short, there's better stuff in Wayne's filmography than this forgettable film.

Infamous

Fantastic dramatisation of the writing of "In Cold Blood", with superb performances from Toby Jones (who overshadows pretty much everyone else) and the rest of a very starry cast.

Cash

Enjoyable French heist caper, although a bit too twisty turny for it's own good (the crosses and double crosses come so thick and fast that it's really difficult to invest too much on what's shown on screen, at times).

Mama

A bit cliched, but solid creepy kid/revenant horror, in which Jamie Lannister and Jessica Chastain take in their nieces, and things that would send anyone who'd watched a horror film running start to happen. No big surprises, but decent, and Del Toro (who has an executive producers credit) is just about detectable.
