The Hobbit is a kids book. It was written to entertain his family and intended to be short, funny and a bit silly.

Jackson's interpretation is laughably wide of the mark.
To be fair the films are "based on" the book.

To can't see what the problem is with the Tolkein stuff. I read the books when I was a kid and I've seen the films as an adult. They're both ok but I wouldn't want to see/read them again. The Narnia stuff was better anyway.

Magnolia. With Tom Cruise, a whirlwind of unconnected, pointless (IMO) turmoil in different peoples lives, flitting from one to another.
I didnt get it...pointless, gave up 3/4 of the way through. ?.utter crap IMO.

Magnolia needs patience and more than one viewing I reckon. Like you I gave up first time around but gave it another go. Well worth the effort once it gets under your skin. And it proves that Tom Cruise is actually a decent actor when he's given something interesting to work with.

I watched Paranorman last night.

8/10

A stop motion nod to more horror movies than you can shake a stick at. Funny, touching and at times quite dark. Dressed up as a kids film, but like so many has a lot aimed at an older audience.

After reading comments on here I just watched all 3 of the Matt Damon Bourne films again as its years since I last watched them. They were not as good as I remember them, and yes Damon is pretty "wooden" but I don't find him irritating at all. Still decent films, the third is best IMHO, way better than other action films like James Bond or that shite Mission Impossible. 7/10 average for me.

I've also re-watched The Wire again for the second time, truly brilliant TV series, although the later series aren't quite as good as it delves more into politicians lives, which I found pretty dull.

I've just started watching Deadwood for the first time. I don't know why its taken me so long, I just never fancied it. I think it is just that it is a Western that put me off, I guess I like this so much as it appears to be very realistic, which most Western films are not.

Tom Cruise is excellent in Magnolia... give a tosspot of an actor the role of a complete tosspot and you can't go wrong.

I keep meaning to watch Paranorman... had it for months but it's stuck in a cue of about 60 other movies I'm yet to watch.

It's like a 12 hour film. Very clever. I never really got round to watching season 2 and haven't missed that though. I'm one for commentary tracks and it's interesting hearing just how precise all of the swearing is, very specifically when they do and when they don't depending on the class of people in the room.

Bump it up the list a bit. It's a fun film and has some decent messages in it to take it up a few notches. I was late coming to it and really enjoyed it.
