What film did you watch last night?

North by Northwest is an absolute classic of pure entertainment. I hugely enjoyed Budapest Hotel too albeit might not appeal to everyone.

Already had North by Northwest on DVD but thought it would be good to have on Blu-Ray,as you say a timelesss classic;looking forward to the Budapest film,Ralph Fiennes is usually good and doesn't seem to make too many duff film choices.Which remimnds me that we still have to watch his version of Coriolanus.

I think that's the only Coen Brothers' film I haven't seen.
Surely it can't be as good as The Big Lebowski?

Deffo not as good as the Big Lebowski but then what is:laugh: Oh brother is still a good film but then that's just my opinion man,,,

I've never understood why Taken is rated so highly. It's a mediocre action flick with a cool speech in it. Basically it's 24 in film form, with a weird nod to the threat of what happens in Hostel.
It's unambitious, but entertaining, I think. A solid 3 stars or so, if you're in the right mood.

The Second Era of Shoah aired on Sunday, so I watched the first 45 minutes on iPlayer last night.

I'm struggling slightly, I think, to separate the scope, and scale of it as an acheivement from its qualities as a film. However, I do think it "works" in that sense too - Lanzman's interview with the barber, in the section I watched last night, for example, is astonishingly powerful. The space the interviewer gives the witness to tell his story is unflinching; you feel that he's left every pause, every struggle to tell the story despite the emotional toll of it, in place; and yet despite that room the stories are given, the film is riveting and terrible and important.

iPlayer will have it for 30 days, and on the basis of the 4 hours or so I've watched so far, I would recommend catching it while it's there.

Unambitious is a good description of Taken. I suppose it irritates me in the same way that Shawshank does, being hailed as some kind of masterpiece which is just isn't.

Shoah, on the other hand... An absolute triumph. One of the toughest pieces of cinema I've seen, for all the right reasons.

My absolute favourite scene in TBL is where The Dude has had enough of people breaking into his apartment, and nails a piece of wood to the floor to tightly wedge his chair under the door handle. It's taken him a long time, but it fits well and he's justifiably proud of his handiwork. Only for those badass dudes to just open his door, which, it turns out, opens outwards! I laughed so much I thought I was going to die.

I think it is my favourite film ever.

I don't think even Taken's biggest fan would describe it as a masterpiece.
It's a solid, fun action film, with pretty good performances, and a good example of its genre.

Man On Fire is far better than Taken but I still enjoyed Taken , don't think I need to watch the sequels though as I doubt they add anything to the first film .

I know a couple of chaps who genuinely think it's the greatest film ever made. Bizarre.

RE: TBL - I don't think I could pick a favourite scene. It's a succession of genius moments from start to finish.

It always occurs to me that I *could* be watching Die Hard, or Point Blank (for example) instead.

Men, Women and Children. It's a modern cautionary tale about relationships, both teen and adult, held together by cyber-glue (internet, smartphone, etc). It was a bit soapy and, towards the end, maudlin but raised some interesting issues around young people's domination of online space and how the "grown ups" are running to catch up.

An outstanding film ! Was lucky enough to see it in the cinema, having been impressed by the trailer a week before. Modern-dress and M16 rifles with bombs and bullets, but with the Bard's language as relevant and modern as it was centuries before. It deserved Oscars for Fiennes (acting & directing / best film) and Vanessa Redgrave as his even scarier mother. Superb supporting parts from Nesbitt & Brian Cox (the other one). At the end of the film in the cinema, everyone stayed silent in their seats whilst the credits rolled as no-one wanted to break the spell.

Some morons on IMBD were saying they couldn't understand the language and that it the language should have been re-written. .... mmm, missed the point or what?
