re: Neeson, Taken has pretty much ruined him, and pigeonholed him into a frankly unbelievable hard man typecast. On first viewing I thought that Taken was decent, but then a friend pointed out that you could replace his daughter with just about any object and the film wouldn't change, which sort of ruins everything.

'I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you give my golf clubs back now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.'
But to be fair, surely that's equally true of every 'quest' movie, but it surely doesn't invalidate them all? I mean, instead of searching for America, Easy Rider could have been about Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper looking for a set of gold clubs - that would have been a bit silly. Raiders of the Lost Golf Clubs, Monty Python and the Holy Golf Clubs...I could go on. But I think my point is made.

As you were.

You make a fair and interesting point.

I'd counter by saying that the films you've suggested would still be excellent if the object of desire was golf clubs.

Finished "Unknown". Less objectionable than Taken, I think, and quite fun, in an old fashioned sort of a way.

I have a rewatch of "Lake Mungo" lined up for the weekend, which I'm really looking forward to - just hope the film stands up to a rewatch.

Watched Downfall on BBC4 Wednesday night.
Excellent film.
I didn't even know they'd turned it into a movie!

Tetris is on the cards. Seriously.
after the success of Mousetrap... anything is possible... that was a sh!t board game, but a cracking movie!

Taken 2

"If an American kid is kidnapped, get her to escape by lobbing hand grenades into the street, her dad will follow the sound of the explosions and say goodbye to kidnapped misery! Some people in the street might get blown up but they're not American."

The Taken and Hostel franchises tap into the American belief that as soon as you set foot in Europe you will be kidnapped and burgled senseless.

I know this is a a film thread and not particularly serious, but that's just stereotypical bollox with no grounding in reality whatsoever. You're also doing Hostel a massive disservice, as it's a far cleverer film than the 'torture porn' critics would have you believe.

Anyway, I went on a Colin Farrell binge last night, mostly to give myself some hope that he will be able to save the next True Detective series from the abject Vince Vaughn.

Tigerland.

5/10

Like Blackhawk Down, it helps to understand the historical context to fully appreciate the film. It effectively captures the futility of training troops for a lost cause and all the frustrations they endure. Farrell is the lead in a decent cast, though his accent is slipperier than Russell Crowe's in Robin Hood. It suffers from trying to cover too many subjects so never really delivers the punch you'd expect.

In Bruges.

8/10

Very funny, very sweary. Farrell is excellent as Gleeson's idiot sidekick, though both are overshadowed when Fiennes' theatrical villain waltzes in and steals the show. Short, sharp and very dark. Recommended.

Minority Report.

8/10

This is more a Tom Cruise vehicle than a Farrell one but stands out as one of the best sci-fi movies I've seen since Blade Runner. It's no real surprise that both are based on the books of Philip K. Dick. This isn't really a spoiler, but I have to admit I still laugh when Cruise is chasing his eyeballs down a ramp.
