It was the bridleway from Clipsham for me in 2020 - but I really cannot remember it!

Had to go up to near Belper for work yesterday, bagged 13 new squares and increased the max cluster by 12

Five years ago my meagre max square was based around my home town (Truro, Cornwall). There wasn't much room for it to enlarge.

Empty roads during Covid gave me the impetus to go further , and now I have multiple 33x33 max squares in Devon/Somerset.
Now squashed between Expoor and Dartmoor, it's tricky to get any better - at least one of thhe tiles in Exmoor has no footpaths marked, and many of the mapped paths in Dartmoor don't seem to exist on the ground. It wouldn't be safe exploring on my own, and I doubt I can encourage anyone else to traipse over miles of boggy tundra.

That's quite impressive @quilkin considering where your based , I think I see some annoying headlands you not quite got to utterly complete Cornwall or due you them it covered , Every year I holiday in Holywell bay and am slowly filled up the middle bit of Cornwall got everything from Holywell to Truro and a lot of the coast up to Padstow and down to Hayle

YouTube vid about Strava data sharing or not !! ,could have some major ramifications for 3rd party apps using Strava s data

Strava being tossers again. I read the article (can't stand Ray's voice on video). This looks like it would potentially break a lot of things on Veloviewer. But in reality they're probably not going to enforce it all or Strava becomes fairly useless.

I only use Strava (free) to get my data into Velo Viewer 'cos I really like the "Wheel" display there. Over the few years I've been a Velo Viewer subscriber on 3 occasions it's broken and I've contacted the site developer who has very quickly replied "Strava have changed their API, working on it" and it's been fixed very quickly.

But before watching the video from DC R (after seeing it above) I already had the impression that Strava don't really recognise the extent that the 3rd party developers and sites bring users to Strava. OK, I use free Strava but a %age of people in my position will become subscribers.

Were Velo Viewer to add taking data direct from Garmin Connect then I'd ditch Strava, or a gateway from Apple Health (unlikely given it's apple specific and would need an app ...) again I'd ditch Strava.

Another aspect to Strava's apparent attitude is that other sites might walk away from them.

Garmin are particularly intolerant of non-Garmin stuff eg record an activity on a non-Garmin device and if you manage to upload it, it wont count towards and Garmin "Challenges" to get you points - 'cos they want you to only use Garmin. Record an activity on Polar Flow and export the .tcx (from Polar Flow) to import to Garmin Connect and Garmin Connect will reject the file because it includes "Polar". Manually edit the <Author> and <Creator> out to make it anonymous and Garmin will then import it OK.

So I can see Garmin not being too bothered if Strava sends itself into decline.

That said, these "Segments" seem important to some and I've not noticed any other systems offering similar alternatives (yet).

Actually Garmin Connect can do segments too, but nobody bothers with that because it's all on Strava.

Garmin could have been Strava, but they chose to focus on hardware and are a very profitable company making real things. I've bought countless Garmin devices and find them extremely good.

I'm going off Strava quickly though.

Not done any Tile Hunting for quite some time.

Today I took the train to Banbury and did a 50 mile circular route from there, filling in my South East Corner with 16 new tiles. Looks like Strava has finally caught up with the HS2 closures etc as the route I plotted managed to navigate around the closures - which is has failed to do on quite a few occasions for me this year.

I'd put some 30mm training tyres on my race bike and they felt comfy and smooth (but not fast) and I quite enjoyed my jaunt.

7 new tiles today which increased the max cluster by 17.

I'll be surprised if I get any new tiles this side of the new year, so the annual scores are tiles increased by 441 to 7,144. Max cluster increased by 364 to 5,384, and max square up 2 to 60 (first increase since 2022)

Nice work. Your max square of 60 will take some catching.

I've just looked back to when I started (23 May 2023) and I had 7,376 tiles, cluster of 512 and 9 x 9 square.

I'm now at 8,723 tiles, cluster of 2,049 and 40 x 40 square.

Doubt if I'll make that much progress this coming year.

That’s a massive jump in 18 months. It certainly gets harder the longer you do it.

I’m now at the point that if I want to get a lot of squares in a single ride it has to be one way or a drive to a new area.

I've just been looking at my summary map and there are a few very straight lines in old rides which don't follow the route of roads presumably due to approximations made by the software at some point. Is there a way of correcting this?

Yes, open the ride from the map. Click on one of the lines and the activity name will pop up, click on that and Veloviewer will open the ride, as it does it recalculates the GPS points more accurately. Be careful though as you can lose squares as well as gain them.
