@Whorty Carl you knocked it out of the park. :notworthy:

@bridgy I think I made a mistake in not drinking enough before the first pit stop and not getting more water on the first 100 loop when I had the chance. Didn't feel as though I needed it at the time. In retrospect a mistake. I ended up doing 3 800ml bottle of isotonic and 2 and a bit of water. They probably all should have been isotonic. Food wise I think I was ok. It was just the cramps I was getting that was doing me in.

Yea a hotel to go back to after the event for a shower, at least, followed by some of those beers I'd earnt is a must.

I was thinking about it last night once the blood had returned to my brain (about 23:30 :B))

I’ve done rides at much higher temperatures and not felt half that bad. I just went way too hard in that middle section. I think after being so bogged down with slower riders at the start, when we got a bit of clear road, we all went a little mad!

I just lost my head a bit I think. Still I’m not sure I’d do it any different next time!

Great to see you guys as always. Sorry I didn’t spend more time with some of you. Maybe we should plan a more sociable social ride ^_^
When I was getting a bit carried away at the start (once we'd cleared the traffic!) I remember you turning to me and saying "you never learn do you?!". You're right, I don't - and it seems you don't either! But I kind of agree, I'm not sure I'd change anything because whizzing along at that point was so enjoyable, and at that point its so hard to appreciate you're going to suffer for it later. Death or Glory!!

Carl, you might be able to recover the ride, dont use the phone app to connect. Use the laptop to connect wired and recovery the ride. There are a few threads about recovering rides. The Elemnt hopefully still has the FIT file

Grovelling apology on facebook from the TOC organisers for the lack of ffod and water at the pitstops (the comments aren't kind to them!)

You named your Strava ride well @TurboTommy - a game of two halves! My average speed for the first - and hillier - 60 miles was 21.7mph, and the flatter last 40 with the winds was 18.8mph. Even the first half was slower than last year though - we had to gradually work our way through an awful lot of slower riders, and things really slowed up every time we hit a hill, until it eventually thinned out. I don't remember it being as crowded as that on the road at the start last year
Wasn't just me struggling with the slow riders on the hills then!! Bit annoying in some ways that the slower riders got in the pen first and hogged the road. For the first hour all I was doing was flying past slow riders.

Not sure the second half felt much flatter than the first half. I think it was lumps in the towns in the second half, against the headwinds, that made it feel as lumpy even though it wasn't. Those fens were a nice 'challenge' though  I'd be spinning nicely at 34kph, then change direction, hit a wall of wind, and instantly drop to 24kph and be grinding away :banghead: Very interesting to experience that.

As I said on a different post, I think Zwift has broken me .... I rode this like I was in a Zwift long 'race'. I was pushing the whole way, no soft pedaling, looking for the next wheel to jump on, group to chase down etc. Listening for wheels coming behind and then jumping on to that group (hence how I got to meet @bert1971 :okay: ). I've never ridden outside like that before ... never had the ability to do it to be fair .... totally transformed my ride experience. I'm tired today, but still buzzing - fecking enjoyed myself :wahhey:

Another factor has arisen in my dnf yesterday. This morning I am coughing up relatives of dockers oysters xx(. Sore throat, runny nose as well. I think I've picked up what my brother had last week and yesterday. Big kudos to him for getting 59 miles before his mechanical ended his ride.

That was my plan this morning but the FIT file has gone from the Bolt. Hey ho ... just have to do it again

To my great surprise, I managed to qualify for the World Championships which is in Poznan, Poland on 1st September.

I came 14th in my age group (55-59) out of 107 in a time of 4:35:59 (chip time).

Unreal Martin! Amazing rides all around by the sound of things. I'd have been pushing the bike after about 10 milee by the sound of things, heat and wind are not my friends :notworthy:

My mistake, if that's what it was, was taking the second loop. I just ground to a halt every time I went into a head wind. Yes it was flat, but it was so open that any wind just seemed to be coming straight at you from the front :bicycle:. Also there wee too many dead straight roads. you'd turn a corner hit a headwind and see, seemingly, 5 miles of riders in front of you fighting the same wind

Zwifting has affected me too. A few times I dropped slightly off the back of the group I was in for some reason, and at first my reaction was to panic and sprint furiously to latch back on - because of the Zwift experience of finding it pretty much impossible to catch up with a group once you let a small gap form, however hard you ride. But in real life of course, all you actually need to do is increase your speed a little (so you're going a bit faster than the guy currently on the front of the group) and you easily catch them back up - no need to panic like on Zwift! I worked this out eventually

I found this to be the case yesterday. I kept looking behind for in-law, to see if he was still with or near me. When I looked back the group I was with had pulled away. I just went puppy paws and easily caught them. Its a shame he wasn't able to stay with me, I ended up waiting longer at each food stop, 20mins at the last one-by then I was seizing up and it took a fair while to get going
