Grovelling apology on facebook from the TOC organisers for the lack of ffod and water at the pitstops (the comments aren't kind to them!)

View attachment 469199
I think I may have worked out what went wrong. A good proportion of the riders were probably repreats. They having done the ride before knew what to expect at the pit stops so did not take as much food as they normally would on a ride of this length. This caused the clear cutting of the food and drink, at least on the first 2 stops. The 3rd by the time I got there still had cake, brownies and bananas as well as gels and water. Feel a bit of my issue was caused by pit stop 1's lack of stores.

Still I went as far as I could yesterday on the resouces at hand, both internal and external, and just fell short. As this was my first sportive I'm glad it was fairly flat and a good learning experience.

Will I go again? probably. 100 or 67? Unsure. I need to do a @Whorty and lose some luggage.

Us whingers haven't put you off then?! Actually Tommy and I were saying on the day if we did it again we might enter the Gran Fondo - just because it looked a bit less packed out at the start. (This was before the ride, not after - when we were in post traumatic shock!)

My turn for a thought on TOC. I don’t know if I saw any CC people but thanks for your help before hand. As previously posted I wanted to ride under 5 hours for the 100, previous best being 5 hrs 12.
I really enjoyed the closed roads. I rode in the sportive and had no issues with food or drink. I was hoping to get in with a group of similar paced riders but never quite happened.
My ride turned into a 3 up time trial to 64 miles and we had averaged 22.3mph. After that the two I was riding with had nothing left and last 36 miles was basically a solo.
Some of those straights into the wind were brutal and I did manage to get with a group for a mile or so before they all slowed.
Good news for me is I finished in my riding time of 4 hours and 44 minutes (21.4 mph avr) so was really chuffed with that, especially because of the last 3rd where I just kept pushing.
Crowds were great and couldn’t help but keep waving, and what is it with kids wanting hands slapped as you go by?
On the whole really enjoyed it but struggled to get out the car after the 2 hours drive home straight afterwards.
How would I know any CC people at the event?
Thanks again for the help beforehand.

Good ride @Ice2911

We set up a whatsapp group to communicate on the day and tell each other where we were so we could meet up. Next time you're doing a group ride with some of us, let us know on here and ask to be added to the whtasapp group - that would be the best way of meeting up on the day.

I agree the closed roads and enthusiatic roadside spectators were great weren't they?

Did you stop for food/drink at the official stops?

I did stop mainly to fill bottles and empty a weak bladder  I drank so much. Couldn’t resist the sausage rolls and chocolate brownies either.

I 'high fived' dozens of kids. Its great to connect(not literally) with the supporting crowds. Imagine if folk tossed abuse because of the closed roads?
i was the same but It was the resounding slap sound as some doing it with riders travelling 22plus mph. I didn’t see any arms broken though ;)

ive been tagged in a facecrack conversation where all the villagers are up in arms about the event ruin their lives - and the litter left behind
it wasnt right for all the plastic bottles strewn in the road and could have been prevented , but i believe a clear up van went behind
i think on whole though there were more people for than against

I guess the ones who hated it stayed away, but there were plenty of really supportive people outside their houses and in pub gardens etc who obviously decided to make a real event of the day and enjoyed cheering everyone on.

There'll always be some whingers though
