Cyclists dismount signs. You don’t ever see signs saying motorists get out and push at road works do you? Make the bloody works safe to cycle through you incompetents.

York sensibly has changed at least one set of those to advise cyclists to take care passing pedestrians, the case in point being the ridiculously narrow shared path on the northern ring road bridge over the river and railway which is just wide enough to pass.

'Push Bike'.

I know technically you push the pedals, but the name somehow trivialises us IMHO.

Oh I don't know, I like the shade of purple that Tesla owners exhibit when you refer to their "jalopy" instead of recognising the brand.
Similar with mobile phones from a certain fruity company.
Or even the manufacturer of baked beans; most of us have brand loyalties to some degrees; some deserve to be ribbed for it though.

As for 'push bike' it clearly defines something that is human-powered. Seems a useful definition.

'Bike' is hugely ambiguous, including run-bikes, pushbikes, e-bikes and motorbikes, depending on your audience.

Even 'e-bike' is ambiguous. I take it to mean a push bike with a legal amount of battery-assist. The media use it also to refer to electric motorbikes.

Words are useful when they bring clarity.

On a similar note, people who use words/phrases to exude some sort of superiority.

A woman I used to work with (who was very loud and very annoying) always referred to her car as "the Merc". "I'm just getting those files from the Merc". I can't remember the model, but it was the most basic model of Mercedes that they do. I found it hilarious when she had to change her car and the garage gave her £1000 for it, at which point she suddenly started referring to it as "my car"

Multiple people in my circle are the same; it drives me mad! It is bad enough that they put up with it, but banning me from switching to the HD version because they are not bothered and think that I am being stupid... :cursing:

Perhaps they're just being lazy - BBC1 takes just one button press (1), BBC1HD takes 3 (101)

They told me to leave the remote control alone and watch with them in SD - there was nothing wrong with it!

Another one said "I can't see any difference" and got uppity when I suggested that in that case she needed better glasses...

For me HD is SD if I'm not wearing glasses, while SD is a bit of a blurr

Exactly!

It is annoying enough needing to wear glasses, but much worse needing them but not wearing them! Watching in SD is like forgetting to put your glasses on, or wearing them but the lenses being filthy.

If you are sitting beyond a certain distance from the screen, your eyes can't resolve the difference between SD and HD.
We can't afford houses that big!

If you want to get into that discussion... if you have a big screen and sit too close to it, HD is too low a resolution!

I've seen this distance/resolution/screen size chart before...

I accept the general idea but I have a 40" set and sit 2.4 m (8ft) from it and that chart says that HD is barely worth it for me, to which I reply 'poppycock'! It is an incredibly obvious difference.

Haha - I just discovered that I still have ITV1 in SD on my Freesat box. Terminator 2 has just started so I have been switching back and forth between HD and SD... Yep, VERY obvious!

It isn't saying HD is only just worth it for you, that is the difference between 720p (sometimes called semi-HD) and 1080p (sometimes called full HD), while normal SD TV is 480i or 586i (not 480p, which is not normally broadcast). Officially both 720p and 108p are HDTV.

And while you will certainly notice the difference between 480i and 1080p, would you really notice the difference at that distance between 780p and 1080p.

If it is a smart TV, try finding a Youtube video that is available in both 720 and 1080, and see how much diffeernce you can see at that distance.

Well, funny you should say that because I HAD noticed that YouTube videos on my 8 year old smart TV do not look quite as sharp as I would like. They are good, but not quite excellent. It turns out that the YouTube app only supports up to 720p and will no longer be updated by Samsung. I have a Chromecast dongle on the back of the TV and can cast YouTube to that and watch in 1080p. Yes, the difference is much more subtle than SD<->HD, but it is there and worth having.

TBH if were watching somebody else's smallish TV in 720p though it wouldn't really annoy me. Watching a bigger set than mine from nearer than I would normally watch, in SD - NO!

Anyway, that's enough SD<->HD annoyance from me for now... :okay:

The YouTube app on my Freesat box has a really stupid bug/lack of feature... There is no way to stop watching a video and go back to the list you chose it from. Either you have to go on to one of the videos suggested to you, or exit the app and start again. How could anybody ever release it working like that!!!! :cursing:
Ha - AFTER 7 YEARS!!!! - I have finally discovered how to do it... down arrow, down, down, down some more, down, down and... there it is - Back to top/Search/Home!!!
