Thank you @The Crofted Crest. My birthday got worse when I then got a text from one sister the whole content of which was to complain about her lot in life and to tell me that her card would be late (just like the card from my parents). Then I remembered I had had a nice day up to that point and there is a good reason I live a 100 miles away from any of them.

Would be nice to spend one birthday not in tears because of my dysfunctional family.

Coming from a dysfunctional family myself, I went down the 'move house, change phone number, don't tell them' route. It's worked so far.
