The realisation you're getting old

Bad grammar, misspelled words… both signs of our times. Everything today has to be done in minutes, where an hour used to be sufficient. Remember the days when quality newspapers and magazines almost never had typographical or grammatical errors?

Back in the days when everything on paper was typed on manual typewriters, (pre-IBM Selectric even, not to mention even Word Processors or “Computers”) my dad was the Assistant Managing Editor of the Wall Street Journal. In addition to editing, he wrote front page articles once a month or so as well. Anyway, back in those times it was truly impressive how there seemed to almost never be mistakes of any kind. Fast forward to today, with everything needing to be on social media within seconds of when it happens, it’s no surprise there are every type of terrors to be found on a regular basis.

Apparently in today’s age, a job done well yes is considered second rate to a job done fast. I still value quality over speed, Ming. I suppose it is just another thing that brands me as an old timer. So be it!

The CC board is also as close as I get to social media. I have no need for Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tic Tok, Pinterest or SnapChat (or Strava for that matter, but let's not get int that here!)

CM, don’t forget the triple doozie of them all… their, they're or there!
Yes indeed this ^. I do wish someone would correct the title of this thread…

I realise my age when I remember that no part of me works properly. As soon as some problem gets ameliorated [ not cured] another crops up to take it's place. No fun getting old.

Which is in itself an indication of old age; noticing a fashion or trend and being somewhat baffled/bemused by the popularity of it!
Even 20 odd years ago though when working, several colleagues had them and while I could admire the artwork in some of them, still don't really find them attractive but certainly nothing against them. Whatever gives you a bit of pleasure.

Was clearing out my desk at work and found my inflatable Mitzi.

Youngsters at work had no idea who she was

Some time ago I was living alone in North Wales after splitting up with my partner.
I needed to get out and about more so I decided to sort myself out and walk up Snowdon - which I had done many times before

I sorted out a suitable route and bought a small back pack - dug out a flask for coffee and suitablle clothing, checked the weather forecast and got stuff in to make a picnic plus extra emergency stuff like chocolate and more chocolate

Then checked I had my asthma inhaler handy and a spare

then started to think

and realised that my asthma - which was just diagnosed - might make walking uphill at my normal speed pretty much impossible
Then I thought about my knees that had become rather less good at dealing with stresses and pressures than they used to

At which point I realised that walking up a big mountain was probably never going to be a responsible idea ever again.

which certainly makes you realise you are getting old!!

Ah yes, there is a sad reality to ageing I guess. I've had occasion to contemplate that of late - but I'm not hanging up my cleats just yet.

A guy who I know called time on cycling completely after dnf'ing a 400 audax - and he'd done over 200 before packing. He felt there was no point riding if he couldn't do it as he wanted. I could understand that.
