Except that they do. You brought up the World Cups of 82 and 86 earlier, where the likes of Kuwait, Iraq, New Zealand and Canada were all playing for the first time in the expanded tournament.

The World Cup is the pinnacle of football, denying teams the right to be there because they're not "big" enough is ridiculous and would mean the likes of the home nations would never have the opportunity to compete there.

Are Gibraltar, San Marino et al ever going to get there? Highly unlikely, but even in qualifying they serve a purpose when goal difference can make the difference between coming first or second in a group.

You've cited countries I haven't even mentioned. I was on about piddly little enclaves, yet you're insinuating that I was taking about large nations. You do know that Canada is a massive country, not a tiny state don't you?

Bloody, hell, I just can't believe what the FA were thinking about in appointing the German coach Thomas Tuchel as the new England manager. I mean, we've had a Swede and an Italian in charge of the national team and it's entirely possible that Sarina Wiegman will be considered one day. You'd have to be a real sexist and/or xenophobe to object to any of those.

But for God's sake, a bloody vegan? That's beyond the pale

Yes, I'm aware. I was mentioning them as in footballing terms they very much are "piddly little nations" as you, insultingly (again) put it.

Good for him! I Like veganism. I'm only a mere vegetarian, sometimes cheating and becoming a pescatarian. Let's hope with the appointment of a German manager that those England fans who sing/chant that embarrassing "Ten German Bombers", and "Two world wars and one world cup" stuff stop doing it!!

He describes himself as "an imperfect vegetarian", which presumably means he occasionally eats meat.

But as you say, definitely not vegan.

This is more for the "Trivial things" thread really but that's always vaguely irked me. You're either a veggie/vegan or you're not. Same goes for folk who say they're "non practising/adherents" of a particular faith.

Another fine win for Killie today. I loved our wee European adventure but it really didn't help the start to our domestic campaign.

One quote from Clement:

"It was not good enough. We need to adapt and play on any surface. It's a different kind of football [on Kilmarnock's pitch] but everybody comes here at some point of the season and we did well here before."

And another...

"Asked about off-field issues, the manager told BBC Scotlland "I don't want to go into that because I don't want excuses about pitches, winds, whatever."

Although he says he's not blaming the pitch or the weather, he totally is. It's funny, because last I checked conditions were exactly the same for both teams, both in terms of the pitch and the weather. I'm not the biggest fan of the pitch, but it only ever seems to be an issue when a side loses.

Good enough for the Champions League but not good enough for Scottish football it seems.

I accept that our pitch is reaching the end of its life and ideally it will be replaced at the end of this season when our new training ground should be available, but the complaints about it have been going since it was installed. And they're mostly based on people's memories of the shoddy early incarnations which are twenty years out of date or what gets used at PowerLeagues everywhere.

The "they cause more injuries" thing is totally spurious too, having been widely discredited, but players/managers can be superstitious and will believe any old bollocks, despite, y'know, evidence.

Still, if it lets Ayrshire's finest live rent free in our opponents' minds I'm all for it. No doubt when we go back to grass there will be new excuses on the occasions we have the temerity to win a game.
