I wonder why the people that have been killed while wearing helmets aren't sending us the damage to prove that helmets aren't the be-all-and-end-all of accidents?
Keithmac, this is just "Selective bias". The ones where the helmet didn't save their life aren't hear to tell their story.
And while we are on the subject of black ice. I once fell of my bike because of black ice (My dad had also warned me that there was black ice on the road, but I choose to ignore the warning). Once I knew I was about to fall off my bike I went with the fall. Was very painful, but lucky I was able to get up and walk away. No head injury, but my left arm. Sadly I don't have photographic proof that I survived that "not wearing a helmet" but this is the problem. Non helmet wearers that survive are silent by their own silence. Helmet wearers tend to take pictures of their injuries to prove a point. I have worn a cycle helmet since I started cycling nearly a year ago, but perhaps because I would take the black ice warning more seriously now, rather than me wearing a helmet.
I'm on holiday at the moment so limited access but I'll post a picture of my scar when I get back, caused by slipping on black ice and hitting my temple/ eyebrow on the road.
I had the same accident again a few years back now and no scar or blood was spilled.
People on this thread will swear bilnd the helmet had nothing to do with the better outcome of the second accident but personally I believe it did.
The point about the collision I saw with another rider hitting a car window head on I suppose you could say unless he tried it again helmet-less you couldn't prove the helmet made a difference. All I can say is there was no blood spilled on that occasion either..
