Village Cross
Junction of Cross Hill/Gauk Street/Silver Street
Fairburn

Once it had a dual-carriageway through the centre, for the A1, when the Great North Road was upgraded
Now that has gone, with the new (post 2006) A1 to the east

It’s a bit of an oddity;
‘WF’ postcode (Wakefield)
01977 dial-code (Pontefract)
District of Selby (North Yorkshire)

Fairburn

This was the pre dual-carriageway ‘GNR’

Further up (I’m look north) the local School & a pub (Waggon & Horses) both open their doors directly onto it!

Friday 10th

I returned the books that l had borrowed when I took the quoted photographs, earlier this morning
When I loaned them (on date in quote), l didn’t see this plaque, or stone, in the entrance foyer

Not sure it applies to ‘Cas-Lasses’ these days?!
No-one would have wanted to wash in either river in the 60s/70s!!

EDIT @ 12:50
A polluted River Aire, & of Aire Street (where the Allinsons Flour Mill is)

Gates to the old site of St Johns Colliery
NewLands Lane
Normanton
Wakefield
IMG_0054.jpeg

There's another gate-post in the bush to the left

A very overgrown entry road

Looking back towards the brickworks chimney, & the bridge over the railway line (between Wakefield - KirkGate & Normanton station)
IMG_0060.jpeg

There's no photograph of the gates, but they're approximately at the '08:00' position of the blue circle on the OS map

There is another chimney roughly 1/4 mile away, this is just standing there, unadorned
(Normanton Brick Works)

It's seen here, at some point when the vegetation was cleared away

With regard to the post of mine, directly above, concerning the ’Nagger Line’, the wrapping has now been removed from the bench

The 'Tub' isn't the same gauge (I didn't notice last week...)

From the information board
The 'Tom Puddings; were lowered into the Canal to the east of it, the line can be seen along the embankment of the River Calder

'The Junction' & 'The Midland'

Market Street, junction with Lower Station Road
Normanton
Wakefield

Two railway related pubs (despite the 'hanging sign' on the Junction)
The station is quite close
The other railway pub’ is now the location of flats; 'The Flying Scotsman'; https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/363019

Mdland; https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3516759

'The Junction used to have appropriate sign; https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/860824

Elsewhere in the town;
- there are 2 'royalty related' pubs, now into now flats; (The Crown & 'The Sovereign'), that face each other
- 2 'hunting dog' pubs; 'Hark To Mopsey' & 'The Talbot' (the latter is demolished, leaving only the eponymous 'Talbot Street')
