Well third day on the trainer, today I did Stratton Audley and was in second place doing quite well.. when all of a sudden I had what I guess I would call a virtual crash.
Basically, I felt a wobble, then all of a sudden the bike came off the roller mount and as I scrabbled to get my feet out of the spd's to get them on the ground, it ground to a halt, then the smell of burning plastic.... I think I was doing about 33mph at the time.
Result, I was slightly shaken, lost my second place on the ride but managed to crawl up from 4th to 3rd by the end.... in the real world, luckily I didn't start propelling myself towards the wall, but I now have a melted gouge out of the inside of my 3 day old trainer.
Root cause.... there's a black locking nut, which on first thoughts looks like just a way to turn the threaded rod to make contact with the bike QR.... but it is a locking nut, it was jammed on at the QR end of the threaded rod but a bit of persuasion with a rubber adjustment tool (mallet) it now locks the threaded rod in place...
I'm pretty sure there wasn't mention of the locking nut in the instructions, even if there is, please learn from my mistake
*edit* - here's what the instructions say, not very clear but with hindsight, the locking nut should be used - they could be a bit clearer though!
How should I adjust the axis of the rear wheel on my bicycle to the trainer?
- Place your bicycle by supporting the real wheel on the trainer roller.
- Stand behind the bicycle – this is the most comfortable position for performing the adjustment.
- Raise the hinged arms on the frame of the trainer and visually calculate whether the space between the lateral connections to the wheel axis is sufficient, too large or too small.
- If it is too large or too small, turn the thread on the left connection (towards the front of the bicycle). To do so, loosen the piece of black plastic that covers the joint between the thread and the hinged arm and turn the thread. Tighten up the black plastic again once you have finished.
- Insert the ends of the wheel axis into the lateral connections on the hinged arms of the trainer.
- Turn the black knob located on the right hinged arm (towards the front of the bicycle) until you cannot turn it any more. Make sure this is tight so as to guarantee a firm hold.
