How very dare you! I actually own some property in Brighton so I'm basically a native! Still didn't stop me needing sat nav to find hove station but we won't talk about that...^_^

Beach-hut?

Many fond memories of family camping holidays in the camp site in Sheepcote Valley next to the golf courses.
Must have been about 1973 last time we went there.
Sadly it looks like the Lido has gone.
I also see it is a Caravan and Motor-home site know.
I vaguely remember having to coins into small gas heaters in order to have a warm shower.
Luxury!

Who has Wahoo Element, what do you think of it compared to Garmin. I have a Garmin 800 it works perfectly and now I've figured how to upload rides from my Android phone whilst on tour. I'm just gauging if it's worth updating my nav

Andy I don't own an element but I did a little reading on it recently.

The main problems people seem to have with garmin is the updates have a habit of messing the software up ( sound familiar?!...), and the mapping is clunky. The element comes with worldwide maps already installed which is a positive. But the screen / graphics are more limited than the latest garmins (might not bother you in grand scheme of things)

You can download maps onto garmin from 3rd party sources which are much better. But I have the garmin 520 which has limited memory space so if I replaced it I'd prob replace it with the 820 because I like the smaller units. Apparently there's a 1030 about to be released which is interesting if you prefer a bigger screen.

I get the feeling more people are moving over to the element as they're sick of garmins gremlins. As it seems a lot more reliable in that regard. Personally I've never had garmin related problems. Have you?

Edit to add: it seems the element has a much better battery than the edge 520/820. It's also much more interactive with your smartphone. You can program navigation routes on the fly. That's a really strong selling point for me. Programming routes into a garmin can be a bit of a bore and I don't think you can do it via smartphone?

I do find it ironic that TT is repkying when, even with his Garmin he routinely gets lost:laugh:

Not that I was in the wrong place or anything:whistle:

Garmins are sh*t. We relied on one on london to Paris with a preprogrammed rout and it got us lost while my ride with gps on my phone AND google maps were showing the right way. I had got rid of my flakey 800. That literally cost us best part of 2 hrs in heavy rain and meant we missed end of Tour D'France. I hated Garmin because of software woes before then. I just won't follow my cycling mates Garmins because we already end up going off route either in Kent or Surrey- it just really seems to struggle with small roads whereas the open source based gps units have less of a problem

I am getting an element very soon. Longer battery life, excellent support and improving feature set. You could always hang on for that new Hammerhead or whatever it is called. See the DCR preliminary review.

I am sorry but I can't take a review of Garmin From TT when he rarely looks at it on a ride !
I have the old 705 and put my own routes on it in map source that I quite like doing when I am going somewhere that I don't know and I haven't had an issue so far
I use the 705 as the battery can last up to about 14 -15 hrs what is good for long rides
I have the 1000 as well that I use for local rides as it's all singing dancing with all the things it does but battery only lasts about 9-10 hrs

I'm seriously thinking of getting a Wahoo Element too, so if you go for it please let us know how you find it!

To be honest my Garmin 800 has been perfect, it never fails to upload and has been through storm and heatwave. With my new phone I got an usb adapter socket which allows me now upload rides when away from home PC.

New toys n all that

I just wondered if it was worth changing all my garmin mounts for the Wahoo. I know there is little mod to the mount to allow Wahoo but in the wrong rotation!

Andy, you clearly have too much free time ^_^ And lots of money?? Can you not get one and try it out for the rest of us?

I bet my lack of orientation skills don't stop you two gits towing behind me around the Isle of Wight in a few weeks!

Andy I'm sure you know but all the newer computers come with Bluetooth and upload automatically which is very handy. Also seeing your gear ratios on the screen is a nice touch but maybe the 800 does that already?

Bob garmin maps are crap but downloading 3rd party mapping makes it as good as any other system. Unfortunately it's still only as good as the person operating it

Looking at the relatively small screen of the element I'd say like the 520 it's prob better for turn by turn directions rather than a larger overview. And this is only as good as your current signal. But installing maps on the garmin is a bit of a bore, and I like the idea of operating the computer via a smart phone.

Basically we're all looking forward to your review Andy :okay:
