Monday was the first bike-commute in nearly three weeks for various reasons including WFH last week due to being poxed. Again.
While it's still lingering in terms of fatigue and respiratory symptoms I was keen to get out of the house, while constantly asking to WFH makes me feel like I'm on the blag and I figured some exercise might do me good.
Buckle up for the pick of all the exciting bits from the week distilled into one adrenaline-fuelled rollercoaster...
Monday, in: Tolerable - chilly with a bit of drizzle but it could have been worse. Few people on the tow path; which after three weeks of my absence looks pretty barren with much of the now sparsely-appounted trees and hedges littering the path. Oddly many cormerants on the canal, and I witnessed one of the parents of the swan family skimming the surface of the water as it took off.
Monday, out: Cold but manageable, not much fun in the dark but better than the car. No rings, detoured to Waitrose and spent £20 on not a lot. Exhausted by the time I got home but felt fantastic for having actually got some bloody exercise at last, and still managed to cook lunch for the rest of the week. Collapsed and - rarely - actually slept through the whole night.
Tuesday, in: Conditions were similar, no cormerants but buoyed by unexpected intimidatingly hot redhead and ponderous lab content
Tuesday, out: Cold, tired and anxiety-fuelled after finding yet another front tube had perished; it thankfully holding enough air to get me home but was flat by the time I'd got the bike out of the car the other end. Bonus points awarded to the dude I saw on the canal piloting a kayak via head-torch light. Lots of nice folks about, as well as a few rodents shooting across the path in front of me.
Wednesday, in: Maybe a shade warmer and certainly drier. Few people again, think I spotted my new favourite dog walker in Wolvercote; stopped and considered saying hello but bottled it
My Smiths-lyrics-worthy self-defeat notwithstanding it was a pleasant ride in - easily the best of the week in terms of conditions - and despite being utterly knackered I think I can feel myself regaining some strength, while my breathing is definitely getting better.
Not especially looking forward to the ride home, but I fully recognise and appreciate the benefit of some much-needed cardio - which, as a cautious fair-weather cyclist I'd not be getting were my hand not forced by circumstance. Feeling much happier and physically less greasy as a result of getting out
