Today was the extra gentle Sunday Ride and I had three bikes ready to roll. Couldn't be bothered to swap the lights from my s/s, but needed a few gears, so took the blue bike (theme developing here Luke!) at first light and went for a muck about around Wembley Stadium etc prior to arriving (first) at Wellington Arch for the usual 09:30.
Ian then turned up with all good grace, as usual...but this time it was a real one. Grace! He had done the trick and coaxed her out to play. Ian, also, had been on an early morning bimble before the serious cyclist business began so we were well warmed up - ready to chill slowly in the Northerly stiff breeze. (All those words but maybe in a different order
)
Dave turned up after Clive, Liza and Luke - he was sporting a jacket reflecting his character - it was tight, and he used this tightness as an excuse for not taking snaps. (And hiding yet another new top).
<At this point, I stress that Dave/topcat is one of the most generous natured of riders and the fact that he is the butt of my ramblings can only indicate that he has 'arrived'
Cheers Dave - I'll have a nice double Appleton pls.
>
Anyway the Avaricious Ayatollah was the next to turn up - Zimzum - our Paul...like me, making and appearance after a long absence. (He must have got 'kicked out' early this morning...or was desperate for some decent company.)
Attention!
And then it was PP time - and I don't mean Pansy Potter, followed by 'The Circuit' of Hyde Park, as per tradition, and a little distraction in the shape of One Hyde Park. Lovely stuff. Google it and watch the videos if you're interested...and Richard Rogers, the Architect has an equally interesting website detailing the construction - understanding that some might find it boring beyond belief.
And then past that other dreary architectural folly, Buckingham Palace, to watch
Liza falling off her bike in slo-mo the nice red-caped spectacle of changing the guard. Escorted by nice and polite police outriders. Isn't life nice when it is dealt with politely?
Back to Admiralty Arch for a nose job, Strand and one of London's lovliest collection of potholes and naff road surfaces, Aldwych and onwards to St Pauls. Talking of which, our saintly Paul had disappeared - to return a bit later via the Embankment!
We wondered who the raggedy geezer in gold was, on the back-side of St Pauls. St Paul is a good starter - anyone remember the statue?
LookMumNoHands was a nice chat. Even my son turned out to wave the peloton onwards to City road. (Didn't go past the Richard Desmond bit of Moorfields as we had just got going, but it is a nice building ) and up the torrid hill to Islington, down to Kings Cross and around to York Way.
After that, we stopped to see the new roof structure spanning Kings Cross (my close friend Doug is running the ops. there for Vinci and I felt it necessary to review his 'work'
) And - The Gasometers. Again Google for more info, to see projects and proposals
http://www.kingscros...com/competition - it's all very exciting!
And then we whizzed to Camden. turned left at Delancey Street, to enter Regents Park for a quick lap (being overtaken by slow-moving shifty types on posh bikes, looking us up and down..."sorry boys, I'm taken" said Ian...
)
Then a right turn at the Royal College of Physicians, across Marylebone Road to Portland Place and a chug to Piccadilly. Regent St was rammed with shoppers - recession, what recession?
But it was lovely to be back in civilisation again, after not having seen anyone for at least four seconds. We toured Paul's favourite clothes shops in Jermyn St and browsed our way past all the deluxe restaurants and hotels, exchanging
potentially salacious musings, before turning into Hyde Park for an aural delight in the form of Speakers Corner (more coffee first though please, ta.)
Ian felt his Valentine's Day longings coming on a day early when he caught sight and word of this woman spouting forth - as is everyone's right - on the 'merits and demerits of not being born in England and being white also' - ****ing stupid cow. (I'm going to test the CC filter with that one. Does it work? * )
Luke and Liza went home via Lancaster Gate, Ian and I did a tour before saying ta ta at HPC again, and I continued around for another coffee and a further listen, before arriving just in time to see a bit of Ireland v France on tinternet.
Thanks all - I found today very relaxing - something must be going seriously wrong...got a bit wet twenty minutes from sanctuary, but it was only a little bit. And now I'm burning warm...nay hot stuff!
I did take portraits but I'll stitch those together later and present a one-framer rather than the tedious frame by frame.
Nice report Ian and your photos are very good quality from that 'phone..
What was the phrase about Dave being fat?
And me. And you. But not Clive...
Sorry - forgot the lady photo...and yes, the filter works just fine.
