First go this morning - quite a lot of blood really - who knew ears held so much? Shaving the right cheek was easy, but it got complicated after that. Where I was confident it's resulted in a really close shave but the jawline, under the chin etc were a bit rough so I finished off with the mach 3. Practice I think.

And styptic pencils.

I think one can use any type as long as you persevere and give it time to adjust. I had always used Gilette type safety razors but got fed up of them becoming blocked all the time and the cost. I then used a twin-blade old fasioned razor for a few years (took me time to get used to it though). I then found it was pulling too much even with new blades (perhaps I should shave every day). So I switched to an electric shaver. That started to give me worse rash than a blade, but after a week of everyday use it settled down. it also doesn't make you bleed over your work shirt when you have a tiny spot. Still prefer blades for quality of shave, but electric for convenience.

I use the old style 2 blade. Converted a couple of years ago.
The blade is a bit more open than modern bic types so I do catch myself a bit but generally it is OK. You do have to apply less pressure and best to try to go over the area just once.

I use Derby blades and they seem to last about a week probably could go much longer but I swap as soon as it gets to be not 100% . Cheap to run, got a box of 10 x 10 blades on ebay for about £7 which should last about 2 years.

Afternoon from a sun lounger in a very hot and sunny Porthmadog

Is anyone using, or recently moved to on the the classic double edged razors which seem to be coming back into fashion? I get dense stubble and suffer really bad razor bumps and burn and have been told and read about how they are supposed to be a better way of shaving once you have mastered the technique.

I'm now 32, been shaving for best part of 18 years and I've tried every modern razor out there and every pre and post shave regimes going but so far all have proven to be expensive gimmicks

Cheers, Kev
Not tried the double edged but I would like to

I used to get terrible razor bumps and rashes, my neck was very very sore

I read up on shaving, and it has made a difference.

Wash your face with hot water, get your face as warm as possible, don't shave upwards only down. Wash with warm water after the shave and use after shave

The rash and bumps are from small infections, this is from shaving too short and getting water in there. If you wash with cold water it closes the hair follicles and traps in dirt

Then use moisturisers, about an hour before shaving I find best

i'll be honest, since posting this 18 months ago I still haven't don't anything. I'm still paying over the odds for wilkinson sword hydro 5's and still keep thinking about changing.

I need man products this weekend so I'll head to the shaving aisle and try a razor with fewer blades

If you want a really good shaving soap go for Mitchells Wool Fat Soap. It's old fashioned but it has been around for alomst 100 years for a very good reason.

The website is not much help unfortunately, but you can but it online from lots of places, six or seven quid. It lasts ages and ages ( I can make a tablet last almost a year ) and for someone who gets razor burn very easily, like me, it's a godsend.
I use it with a DE razor and sometimes cheapo disposables and it leaves the face smooth, moisturised, and cut free.

I used to use spray foams and gels and none of them can hold a candle to it.

Convert to DE shaving after reading this thread a couple of years back. I bought a multi pack of blades from the rainforest for about a fiver. That was a stack of 30 packs I think and still going through them ! I don't shave every day can't be bothered to be fair however a blade does me two shaves I just turn it around in then razor. Cheap ass shaving however smashed my alum block so need a new one and could do with some new shaving soap as well. Currently using Palmolive shaving soap and a cheap ass brush. Not sure any of these fancy badger haired brushes will make any difference !

hmmm ...... might give this a try. The blades for my usual Gillette Fusion are very expensive.

Cheers @colly , on the strength of your recommendation, I've put in an order . . . . . . . as a sucker for a good sales pitch, I've also ordered the requisite ceramic dish.
