Been using a DE razor for several years, so much more comfortable and cheaper than the 'modern' cartridge razors.

Bit of an initial outlay for some of the bits (I have a Merkur that was about £30) but blades and stuff are so cheap.
I get a tub of shaving cream every few years http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk...t-Sandalwood-Shaving-Cream-696770010013.html# and blades fairly infrequently.

Recently got a selection pack of different blades from the site I just linked, was pretty surprised at the variation but once I've used them all I'll be sticking to http://www.traditionalshaving.co.uk/root/3984672-Astra-Superior-Platinum-Razor-Blades.html as they have been most comfortable and at 25p a blade, which can happily be used 3/4 times, you save on the razor cost pretty quickly!

Straight razors are dangerous enough, but there is always someone that wants to go to the next level, isnt there...

I use a king of shaves razor.... pay a subscription of £3.00 per month and 4 blades get posted to me every month. I end up with so many I give some away... but don't want to stop the subscription as I don't notice it leaving my account and I don't have to shout 'HOW MUCH!!!!!!' in supermarkets every few weeks at stupidly priced Mach3 blades.

Here's an offer from moneysavingexpert.com for that razor plus three blades for a penny. The full price after the first month is much higher than you're paying though..

...and you're already, when all's said & done, laying out £36 a year for razor blades - about £33 a year more than me, and I'm smooth as a baby's bum.

I'm not spending anywhere near that amount, I'm like you. Heck, I don't even buy shaving cream any more!
I posted the offer in case anyone wanted to get a few shaves for a penny.

I got the penny deal for 1 month when they changed to a new website.... I think my deal is still available to new customers but there is a better blade that is dearer.

Yes but I was spending nearly a tenner a month on mach 3 blades so would then try cheap dodgy ones cut myself and swear so I'm happy at 36 quid year..............

I've decided that, at the age of 49, it's time to become a man so I've ordered a cut throat razor. Nothing confirms manliness more than using a lethal weapon as part of one's daily ablutions. Browsing this thread I see a lot of folk on the safety razors - anyone tried a cut-throat? Any advice?

Been using the same Gillette razor since about 1960 (or a bit earlier) and Wilkinson stainless steel blades. Ordinary soap is fine. Blades last at least 3 months (usually miss out Sundays and have a goatee, so reduced shaving area) but recently, one lasted from 26/01/14 to 07/05/15. Its successor was thrown away on 3rd Feb last.

I usually leave off shaving for a week when it starts to get blunt(ish) and then use bikini wax on one side and shave t'other. If shaving more painful than waxing, it's time for a new blade

I bought a Merkur as a result of the last discussion, and to be honest I ain't that fussed about it, its ok, its no better than the Gillette I used before it, no worse either I guess, a bit of a faff changing the blade but the blades are a lot cheaper and seem to last but I don't think the shave is any closer or better. To be honest I wish I hadn't bothered with it, but now I've got it I'll keep using it.

I use an expensive badger brush and soap (which were gifts) and they are lovely, especially the soap which is lasting ages, I was using these before I got the Merkur

The post above is from July 2014, I've given up on the Mekur, to much faff and not a close enough shave, I am now using a Sainsbury's own brand three blade razor, which are much cheaper than the Wilkinson Sword/Gillette type. As for the soap and brush,I'm still using the the same soap, there's loads left after two years and the same brush.

I've progressed from the Gillette mega-bladed monstrosities costing a fortune and cheap disposable razors to an Edwin Jagger DE89/Red Pack Israeli Personnas/Edwin Jagger synthetic brush/Van Der Hagen shave soap setup, and have given thought to a straight edge. TBH the problem is that my current setup gives me such good shaves that I've held off; I feel like I've got what I'm looking for at the moment!
