Shaving - classic double edge razors

I use a king of shaves razor.... pay a subscription of £3.00 per month and 4 blades get posted to me every month. I end up with so many I give some away... but don't want to stop the subscription as I don't notice it leaving my account and I don't have to shout 'HOW MUCH!!!!!!' in supermarkets every few weeks at stupidly priced Mach3 blades.

you lot are all so lucky shaving every day . i am 48 and still only need to shave twice weekly . my razors go rusty before they get blunt
Bloomin eck, I wish I could get away with that. I feel grubby if I've not shaved in the morning and I'm not particularly stubbly!

I've almost always used a double edge razor. I had a brief foray in my 20's into the Gillette Mach (whatever they're called) thing until I realised what a crap shave they give. I buy wilkinson sword blades at Boyds for about 50p a box, cheap as chips!

DE razors for what must be getting on for 5 years here. Partly price, partly the shave, partly because it just feels more manly .
I've bought a mixed selection of blades a couple of times, disadvantage is i cant remember which ones I prefer by the time I get to the last ones.

I've had a lifetime of having to shave last thing at night because my stubble grows so thick and randomly that I was bound to cut myself, and I sometimes ended up bloodying the collars of 2 or 3 white shirts in the morning. Since I changed to the normal Gillette Fusion blades (not the power ones) I've never had a problem. I get a really clean smooth shave just using a splash of water. Never need to use foam, gel, soap, brushes or any other expensive "essentials" of shaving, and each blade lasts me 1-2 weeks. The blades might be a bit pricey, but I just wait for special offers at the supermarket and buy in bulk when the time is right. No other expense incurred in shaving, whatsoever.

Thanks for the responses. Has anyone bought a cheap option such as the wilkinson sword classic to see if they get away with it?

Reviews say the blades are what will make it or break it and to get a sample pack with a few options?

I use a cheapy from a French supermarket with whatever blades I come across it doesn't make much difference to me except some "Treet"(?) blades that were terrible, I used one for one shave and threw the rest away.

Edit: The razor is a "Timor".

I started with the cheaper wilkinson sword unit & blades. Cut myself to bits however careful I was.

I bought an Edwin Jagger DE89 & some Derby & Feather blades and am fine with it.

I put the WS unit & a pack of feather blades in my travel wash bag. First time away I shaved and cut myself all over again.

Moral of the story: the cheap predominantly plastic handles are not worth it.

I use the Aldi twin blade ones - no complaints.

I first started when I bought a basic razor while I was in Goa on holiday. I'd been thinking about it for a while, and when I saw it there for about 70p, I thought why not? And it was fine. And I used it for the best part of a year, tho' I did nick myself slightly ever few days. Then last Christmas I got the in-laws to get me the Merkur for Christmas (it's always a bit of a struggle to think of something, also the idea of spending £20+ for a razor just seemed a bit decadent). Since I started using it (using the same blades) - about seven months now - I think I've cut myself once.

I prefer my Gillette tech but I get along fine with the plastic Wilkinson Sowrd. I tend to use it on holidays. Boots do their own brand DE as well which looks really cheap and tacky but works pretty well.

I did. Wouldnt recommend ir as its not really representitive of the experience of shaving with a proper metal one.

Also... did you know there are shaving forums? Badger and blade and theshavingroom are 2 i can remember.
