Having revisited this thread, I'm going to have another go with the Merkur tomorrow morning. I enjoy the ritual with the cream and the brush but the blood loss was getting a bit much and I always felt I had to get that last bit under my lip or under my ear with the Mach 3 which made it all seem a bit pointless.

I still use the soap and brush I just use tesco twin blades for comfort. I also use Nivea shaving oil under the soap very cheap and very effective.

Just take your time, try and maintain ~30 degree blade angle to your skin and apply no pressure, the weight of the razor is sufficient. Once you get the knack you will never want to shave with a Gillette Mach Cheesegrater ever again. And don't shave against the grain no matter which razor you use.

If I don't shave against the grain, it just doesn't feel close enough.

I'm going to take a trip up to the town of Jute, jam and teenage pregnancies on Tuesday to visit the Gentleman's Groom Room.

Oh my, that was fun. Like an LBS for shaving.

What a wonderful shop owned by Ian, a thoroughly knowledgeable chap who pleasantly inveigled twice as much as I had intended to spend. Now the proud owner of a Muhle D89 which I've just tried out and am very happy with. Also left the shop with the wool soap stuff, a pack of feather blades and a bag loaded with free samples. Mrs swl particularly likes the colognes.

...did you perchance mean an R89 razor. Anyways, sounds like you got some nice kit there - happy shaving...........

That looks awesome. Where is it? I was in a similar shop in London on Thursday, Piccadilly Gallery.

I added a Merkur Progress to my Merkur 34G. A very good choice I think ;)
