Must admit, i find it a bit depressing when once the announcement was made of her death, the first thing on many peoples lips was...will we get a bank holiday ?
We didn't for the Queens Jubilee and i suspect we won't get one for the funeral, heyho, i don't make the rules.

Yes we did. didn't we? We got 2 days in early June rather than the usual one for Whitsun

When you say "We" there, I presume you mean the employees of your company?

Most people did get one for the Jubilee, and will get one for the funeral. I must admit, it doesn't really bother me.

I won't be watching, I find most big state occasions rather boring, so I will probably use the opportunity for an extra bike ride, if our company honours it. That hasn't been decided yet.

I might take the opportunity for a bike ride to London :bicycle:

Got an email on Sunday saying my entire stay (Sunday 18 to Friday 23) has been cancelled by the Aparthotel I'm staying at. Suspiciously, it is now showing as being entirely full that week. I presume the Emir of Oman's (or similar) entourage have made them an offer they can't refuse, it's a block of six apartments, and I've been bumped

Luckily I got myself rebooked elsewhere. Not as good and more expensive though.

It was literally the first thing that came to my mind when I heard. I'm practical minded like that. Bank holidays to me equal cycling opportunities. It's the only way in which all this business actually affects me.

I think it's been confirmed that there will be a BH on Monday. Unfortunately I won't be able to get out on my bike. I'm hoping for one for the coronation tho, with a bit more advance notice

I find it annoying, even disrespectful that what looks like 90 percent of people supposedly watching the Queen's coffin pass by are filming it on their phones. Why??! While doing this they are missing the once in a lifetime moment. They aren't watching the Queen's coffin, they are watching their phone screens!🧐
Ok, so they'll have the moment on their phones, but why bother when it's all being recorded by the media anyway?! I think Bob Dylan said similar the other month after one of his concerts. He was annoyed that those who'd paid to watch him spent most of the performance filming it, rather than actually watching it!🤔 Strict instructions have been made to those intent of filing past the Queen's coffin about the use of phones/cameras. Anyone attempting to film the moment as they pass by will be severely dealt with. I bet some will still try and hide cameras to sneakily film the moment. I hope anyone attempting to do so will be severely dealt with!!🧐

On the (infrequent) occasions I do use my phone to film some event I'm attending, I just point it and start the video, then just an occasional glance to be sure it is still going, I'm most watching what is behind it.

But I very rarely do so anyhow. It has taken me a while even to think of stopping to take photographs on my bike rides.

I'm curious to know what's happened to the "balance" that the BBC normally fetishises, to the extent that they give airtime to all kinds of loons: flat earthers, anti- vaxers, climate change deniers and so on.

What has happened to their precious balance?

What would "balance" it here?

Whether you like it or not, it is major news. They can't exactly balance it by giving out the "news" that the Queen is still alive, can they?

The fact that she is dead is undeniable. But that fact is so well known it is no longer being reported.

OK, for a bit of balance:
I'm not an ardent royalist, but certainly not a republican by any stretch of the imagination. And I do believe that Queen Elizabeth deserves some sort of respect on her death. However I have a son who has only spent 9 years under her rule, and is a 9-yr-old boy, so doesn't really understand what the kerfuffle is all about.

So I have offered the option of a big day out on our bikes for the BH on Monday. But I don't want it to be disrispectful, or even dismissive of the momentous event going on. So how do we turn our "taking advantage of the quiet roads" day into a celebration of the life and reign of one Elizabeth Windsor?

And for the ladeez, Jowwy suggests Chanel No 5 or for those with more discerning tastes, Chanel No 19.

I wouldn't worry Jim, the cynic in me suggests there will be plenty of people who have no real interest in the Royals but will use the day as an excuse for a p_ss up down the pub, probably followed by a barney!!
