Comfy armchair to one person & a plank to the next
I believe another reason is to allow 4 full days of lying in state in Westminster Hall, so that as many people as possible will be able to pay their respects.
As long as they are in London then. Northerners and midlanders must either travel or content themselves with waving at the plane as it passes overhead.

Are there exciting bits to a funeral?

Sounds like me watching a flat grand tour stage!

Well there's always the sprint finish.

Watched: The Unseen Queen on iPlayer last night.

Basically a collection of the Queen's home movies.

Even as someone not pro-Monarchy I found it very interesting and somewhat moving.

Worth watching imo.

I've just watched that; touching glimpses of family moments, behind-the-scenes glances of state events, and more; much of it narrated by The Queen herself.

It was educational and emotional.
Somewhat damp eyes here. 100% recommended.

Thank you so much for the recommendation

There's a Roman Catholic primary school 120 yards down the road. We've been here for thirty something years, and it's been delightful watching small kids going back and forth, sometimes screaming and sulking, and sometimes skipping and jumping.

The school put up a display on the school railings in which some pupils (quite young) expressed their thoughts. One, in a childish hand, wrote "Dear God, please look after the queen. We still miss you".

Yes.

Did they show that for her recent jubilee? Sounds familiar - I do love the old home movies.

The closest I got in distance to our Queen was about 1.5 miles away. It was in 1968 when her train passed through Rishton railway station, while we were at school. I think some fellow pupils walked (with a teacher) to the station, to see the train pass by.🤔

She always wondered where you were.

Hmmm.

A period of lying in state in each of the major towns/cities of the UK might just bring a few practical problems.

From Amble it’s still a 180 mile round trip, from Leeds it will be over a 500 mile round trip, not even feasible, let alone the joy of driving into Edinburgh, never mind the queues Edinburgh isn’t really that geared for such an onslaught of us Northerners
