And Diana, think it was either Laser 558 or Atlantic 252 that seemed to be the only English radio that was not in mourning. Seems that normal programming has largely returned if you look beyond BBC1 and ITV1.

Atlantic 252 was a long wave station I used to listen to, might have originated from Ireland.

Was a good station but I've not heard it for 20+ years.

You must be a hoot at funerals

Not sure how you managed it, but it was not markemark who said that, but rather MichaelW2.

According to the website that should know https://www.royal.uk/union-jack the origins of the term Union Jack for the Union Flag are uncertain.
Various suggestions are made including a proclamation by Charles II that the Union Flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack flag at the bowsprit; Jack once meaning small.

Diana was mass hysteria. Totally surreal living through that, felt like the Midwich cuckoos were taking over.

Just for a bit of balance though Bolton Wanderers didn't cancel their first game in the Reebok Stadium, it was played the day after she died.

And I was there. 😊

It was always my understanding that it was the Union Flag and as such, I probably always will. It does say, either is correct.
It's one of those nice idiosyncrasies of the English language that's in danger of being lost.

Looked at the online betting for the next Prince of Wales.

Shaking Stevens- Evens

Some Greek / German who supports England at the World Cup 2/1

Aaron 'Union Jack' Ramsey - 3/1

Derek Brockway - 4/1

Andy KING - 7/1

Noel from Hearsay - 9/1

Ryan Giggs + Imogen
Thomas - 69/1

David Cotterill - (no bets taken as has already declared himself the master of the universe)

NB. I realise this is a post for a selective audience and there will be people asking who are Derek Brockway and David Cotterill.

I suspect online betting doesn't really mean anything.

Not sure who your "selective audience" may be, and presumably meant to be a joke (since the new prince of Wales is already decided - it is Prince William), but I don't really get the humour here (and I have heard of all but the last of those).

Permit me to explain M'Lud

It has been suggested in certain quarters that the office of Prince of Wales is an archaism and that in due course the people of Wales should have some say in the Prince that is foisted upon them. The poster is speculating on what that choice may be.

Ryan Giggs is a sportsman who is what I believe is referred to as "a wrong 'un".

It made me smile slightly, although I may have completely missed the point or misinterpreted it.

RIP

Whatever your views of the monarchy, she kept to her initial statement and has been a solid thread for the past 70 years.

I'm not sure the future kings/queens will be as consistent sadly.

I used to think the same but....
Now I'm not so sure. Charles is very worldly wise, he's (barring the Diana affair) never really been daft, controversial (in a way that offends people) , just head down and dignified. I see the same in William and everyone seems to adore Kate. They may well have everything it needs to carry the Royal family forward. Never going to replace Elizabeth, but I think they'll do OK.

The Queens death brought out some quite surprising reactions from people. My younger brother ((60), gruff as you like, has been genuinely upset and gushing about her. It seems at odds with his rough tough exterior
