I've just bought a couple of these and they do feel sharper than the 'standard' wilkinson sword blades, having said that I usually buy my blades from Boyes they are about 50p for a box of 5 Wikinson Sword branded blades.

My tub of shaving cream is 1/3rd used, cost me a fiver from shaving shack. (Proraso)
I would have gone through 2 cans of Gillete by now easily at £7 each.

God, that takes me back! Sitting on the plank the barber used to put across the arms of the chair to lift you up, cape on, snippety snip going on round the back, vacantly gazing at the advertising: "7 o' clock cock!". Was that deliberate, or were people just oblivious to double entendres in those days?

Thanks to this thread I have just had my first DE safety razor shave. Smooth, no burn and all of my blood & skin is still in place. I could get used to this.

I've started out with the kids kit, Wilkinson sword DE & blades and a supermarket brush & soap, £10 the lot. This way if I don't get on with it, its cost me less than the cartridge blades I'd have used anyway & if I do I can upgrade to lifetime quality instruments.

I am interested in this traditional wet shave malarkey. We get badgers in our garden most evening so tonight I am going to pounce when they aren't suspecting anything (they have poor eyesight so I'm in with a chance) and see if I can pluck a brush's worth before I get mauled to death

Thanks guys.

Now one more question.

So far I've used Palmolive cream in a toothpaste style tube which has never let me down, and once I tried soap but that seemed to dry out far too quickly.

Does anyone have any suggestions on the lubrication front, or is it as you were?

I ordered the Poraso tub and 3 months in, i have used less than a 3rd. Cost £5.60
This wet shaving is fantastic, and so much cheaper than Gillette blades and cans of foam every month.
I have also found shaving more of an art, take my time and enjoy the occasion.

I'm using Mitchell's Wool Fat soap - natural lanolin, made in England and a block seems to last forever.

I can usually make a block last 6-9 months. It can be a bit drying though. Crabtree & Evelyn shaving cream is better but doesn't last as long and is more expensive (i usually wait for special offers).

My wife bought me a pot of this last month for my Birthday along with a badger hair brush. Its bloody lovely stuff, I've been shaving for forty years and I have only just discovered it.

What is the consensus on razors and blades, I can't be bottomed to read through the whole thread?

Merkur 38C razor - long handled cos I've got big hands.
Feather blades cos they are the sharpest I've ever used.
Kent shaving brush - BK4 I think. The longer it's used the softer it seems to get.
Mitchells Wool Fat or Crabtree & Evelyn shaving cream.
